BFG GTX 285 OCX Drivers crashing?

Hi all,

I purchased a BFG GTX 285 OCX a couple of weeks ago.But not had time to use it much.

I recently started playing some games COD4, Counter strike, Did 3D 06 benchmark and every so often at random times I get a freeze/locks up in middle of game, then screen goes black and brings up -

"WINDOWS DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING"

"the nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally.Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality" etc..

This has happened about twice a day over a week.

Im certain its not a heat issue as i use evga precision through my G15 screen.
it runs about 65 - 75 degreesC at load with fan set to 65%.

I have tried a few official drivers 182.06, 182.08, 182.02, But still same.

Not tried any new beta drivers yet though.

Could this be a driver conflict somewhere OR is the card faulty? should I RMA card?

I put my old 8800GTX back in and it runs perfect. STRANGE??

I wonder if it doesn't like to run at OCX speeds.Which means its not what it says on the box.

My system

ASUS COMMANDO latest bios
CORE 2 E8400 @ 4 GIG
CORSAIR 4 GIG RAM
CORSAIR HX620 PSU
BFG GTX285 OCX
RAPTOR X 150
SAMSUNG F1 1TB
WINDOWS XP 32BIT / VISTA 64 DUAL BOOT

any suggestions much appreciated !!

thanks!

I suggest you uninstall nVidia drivers and then use some driver cleaning utility to get rid of all bits of the driver. Then reboot and install new fresh drivers.

Anything other than the card overclocked, as ive read overclocking can cause that, and if not, card could be faulty, so you could try reducing its clocks to test. :)

I was hoping it is a driver fault :( But I have a feeling my card doesn't run at specified OCX speeds. If thats is the case I wonder if its classed as faulty?

I will reduce clocks later to test.

Thanks

Going well ta!
Put the clock speeds to OC2 spec using EVGA precision tool:

Core 691Mhz
Mem 2592Mhz
Shader 1566Mhz

Been on COD 4 online for 2 hours running at 1920X1200 res max detail and WOW No crashes what so ever.

Did a few 3dmark 06 runs aswell. So far so good.

Im not sure what to do. Whether to RMA it or just keep it.

What shall I do?????

Theres not much difference in OCX and OC2 speeds.Im happy at OC2 speeds.

If I RMA it i wonder if i will get refurb one?

Just looked the speed differences up, and its bugger all that, if it were me id just keep it if it runs fine at OC2 speeds, as i doubt theres a difference in performance with the OCX only being clocked a miniscule bit higher like that. :)

Thanks for all your comments and expert advice! At least I know what the problem is now and can play games trouble free.I know I paid for the OCX version that won't run at specified speed.

BUT like LoadsaMoney says theres bugger all difference in speeds. I'm happy at slightly slower stable speeds. So i will probably keep.

I got 10 years (BFG warranty) to make my mind up LOL!

Great that I found this topic. Exactly the same behaviour with my just arrived BFG GTX 285 OC2. I was thinking to "downclock" settings a bit and try, but you just confirmed my guessings

It's good to hear that your card is running OK at lesser clocks, but I agree with you OP. If you paid for an OCX card you should be able to run it at the OCX clocks you paid hard earned money for. If you are interested in swapping out the card let me know and I'll have something arranged for you.

This applies for anyone else having this issue as well.

Hi Jeff, great to see you here. As I said, I refloted the thread just because my new card is showing exactly the same issue. When I downclocked the card to the OC+ levels (mine is a OC2) then I didn't have any graphic problem at all with several games that were showing graphic corruption or get stuck. So I already contacted yesterday with BFG support and talk with Tim (don´t remember now surname, sorry ) by email. But if you can take it from here I will be more than happy with it. Thank you

just bought one of these yesterday and its been a nightmare for crashes/graphics corruption, same card BFG GTX 285 OCX.

Tried with 2/3 different driver versions and its been crashing a lot on COD WAW.

Thought it was a driver issue but after reading above it maybe due to clocks. The temps looked OK so thought it must be flakey driver but after reading above will try underclock and report back.

Ive had several freezes a couple of lockups, but the most annoying thing (this is in CODWAW) is that it will run fine and then all text changes to black boxes the mouse cursor again changes to black box and basically you cant see any text. It doesnt look the same as graphic corruption (with the checkboxes that you get with that) so didnt think it was an overheating/overclock thing.

Shoot me an email regarding this with your contact info (if you haven't already, it's hard keeping all these aliases straight :) ) and I'll get a working card to you.

Thanks.

ive sent a quick email but not sure I want to RMA at the moment will see how it runs next few days.

I have underclocked the card as the original poster had (core 691, 2592 mem, shader 1555) and it seemed to run OK. I have now bumped up the core/memory to original speeds (702, 2664) and will see how it runs.

Would the small reduction in the shaders affect performance much?

On a side note does anyone know what temp the auto fan would switch at. If I leave fan on auto I noticed the fan has only ramped up about twice from the 40 percent. This was when it got to about 80 C, is this normal?
