bhp question..

well no you wouldnt be racing in 5th or 6th gear in a petrol. but what i said was that if you put your foot down in 5th or 6th gear it would give the illusion of a slower car than if you were to do the same in a TDI...

do 100% of the drivers out there in a petrol actually drop a gear to accelerate on the motorway? no...i dont usually, most ppl i know dont and will change as few as possible.

but yes if it were a genuine race, you would expect both ppl to be in the right gear. this was not clear in terms of your argument.

Right so the reason why a diesel is better because of this is... what exactly?

do 100% of the drivers out there in a petrol actually drop a gear to accelerate on the motorway? no...i dont usually, most ppl i know dont and will change as few as possible.

Nobody would drop a cog to accelerate on the Motorway because nobody wants maximum performance to get back to cruising speed on the Motorway. The fact you can do 50-70 slower in 6th than a Fabia diesel is irrelevent because its not a performance critical maneouver.

Let's have a real example:

Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi 115 HP 280 Nm (300 Nm with overboost). 0-60 in 10.8 s, top speed of 118 MPH.

Ford Focus 1.6 Petrol 115 HP 155 Nm (Nearly half the overboost torque). 0-60 in 10.8 s, top speed of 118 MPH.

So, tell me, what's the more relevant figure for comparing maximum performance - power or torque?

In this case, the diesel should be faster - it has the same power yet additionally more torque. However, the advantage the extra torque brings is compensated for by being 10% heavier.

have to say i totally agree with this

after my car was remapped its peak torque was increased by over 50%, but ive barely seen any reduction in acceleration times.

Dynolicious has shown a rough 0.2 second improvement in acceleration, in that 0-60 now takes about 5.9 seconds versus 6.1. The in gear times are roughly similar too, im still not doing 30-70 more than 0.5 seconds quicker than before.

0-60 times i could understand due to loss of traction, but you dont get loss of traction on a 30-70 run. The improvements are much more in line with the modest increase in power (10 % power boost from 280bhp to about 300bhp) than a 50% increase in torque.

Me and rG-Tom had a bit of a race up saddleworth moor prior to the remap, and i pulled away from him slightly. Come north york moors meet, with 70bhp more and approx 160 lb/ft more, im still only slightly pulling away from him. Certainly not leaving him for dust or look like he's going backwards

despite what the 160 lb/ft of torque difference would indicate.
