Bicycle chain 'grabbing' cog

Have a standard bike that I refitted the rear wheel on (it wasn't spinning true as the bearings had loosened on the axle) since then the smallest pedal cog/sprocket 'grabs' the chain (which then jams).

I'm by no means experienced maintaining a bicycle, but fairly experienced mechanically (and technically).

Any tips/ideas on what might be causing this? It only seems to happen one the 1 cog, which is the most frequently used! All oiled and nothing fowling it that I can see!

If I can't sort it today I'll be taking it to halfrawds to sort :/

Rather than halfords you might want to try and find a decent independent local bike shop, they'll be better at the job and you'll be supporting small bike shops which are awesome.

Can't help with regards to your problem however sorry!

if the wheel has shifted horizontally as a result of things being tightened back up the gears may need readjusting.

Hmmm, I certainly don't know how to adjust the gears! Going to try readjusting the wheel to see if I can sort it that way... Thanks neil_g!

I think we need some clarity on this...

The chain is sticking in some way on the small chainring ie at the pedal end of things.

That right?

And what had you done when fixing the rear wheel? Had you taken everything apart? Did it all go back on in the right order?

It seems neil_g was correct! I adjusted the rear wheel some and tightened it back up - problem solved!

Von your clarification was correct!

Thanks all :)
