Hi,

Just bought a new 10 speed chain for my bike and unlike the 105 model that is currently on there the new one has no 'powerlink', just a reinforced connector pin. I have a couple of powerlinks hanging around, is there anything to stop me from removing one link from the new chain and swapping it out for a powerlink?

New chain is a 6600 Ultegra.

If they're the SRAM gold powerlinks then they're made for 9 speed chains. The SRAM 10 speed powerlinks are black, built for the narrower 10 speed and are supposedly a use once system. If you're replacing a chain because it's worn, measure out the new one to be the same length, new chains generally come with extra links.

What he said, Power Links are a pain to use once they have been on the bike for a while. Once a little dirt gets into them they almost require two pairs of hands to release....

In your case a good chain tool is vital and I would throw a way the Shimano 'black' pin and carefully re-use one of the normal pins you extracted when correcting the length.
