Bicycle help

My training up till now has been on the stupid heavy full susser so the speed on a road bike would probably rapidly increase , for my short 10 mile round trip commute though thats good as it helps strengthen the legs.

Cheers for the advice people :)

On your 10mile round trip is it hilly or flat? what is your average speed on the MTB?

I started in October 2007 cycling to get fit and commuting a 20mile round trip, sometimes 24miles on the road, it was on this heavy Saracen Xray front sus bike, was in a flood plane one evening with the river bursting it's banks when the damn rear wheel snapped off the frame :(

I think maybe the best would be just 2 bikes even though it is more expensive, a hardtrail on the road even with locked suspension is going to be slower and harder at the same speed as a road bike. And dont know about you but I'd hate to do 200miles in 2 days on a hardtrail even with some tyres on for the road.

12 minimum up to around 14/15 mph average , sometimes see in excess of 24/25 on the big dual carriageways going downhill.

The MTB is horribly heavy though , no way would i carry it if i broke down lol

the option id go with would be buying a decent hardtail for the weekend use and events etc but then for the commute during the week get a chep set of wheels with some street/slick tyres on. just need to swap the wheels every weekend which should only take a few minutes

edit- ah i just seen that the longer mileage bike rides will be on road

probably best with 2 bikes then . even a really basic/cheap road bike will be loads faster than a XC hardtail on the road

to be fair though the XC bike will still seem an absolute shedload faster than what you use now !

Have you ever done 100miles in a single day on a MTB on road?

I guess it's ok if he is doing it on his own then he can do it at like 13mph average, if he's got others with him, especially on road bikes he'll be holding them up and getting dropped all the time.

**edit**

Ah you got a edit in there.

I'd not even use a cheap/basic road bike, something decent or something people can recommend, last thing you want is loads of problems! Needs to be reliable.
