Bicycle Question...?

£180  Thats a little bit more than what I was expecting to spend on repairing this bike

The gears are 3 x 7 as far as I remember...

(you may want to star out that s word - I don't think its allowed)

Its hard to price stuff on the net as its all new up to date stuff but the local halfords will have 7spd freewheels.......basic suntour cranksets and so on. Just to get the bike back to the way it was. They can hit you up with a £25 rear QR wheel to take the freewheel.

From memory it will be:
£10-15 for a lx level......un53 square taper BB(best to go for this as its sealed and will last longer than a cheapo cup and cone VP components thing)

£20-25 for a basic chainset

starting at £25 for a back wheel(quando hub + basic rim)

£1.99 per cable for front and back gears + 2 for the brakes if they need it,

£7.99 for a 6/7/8 speed chain or rust proof one for £12.99

£14.99 for your rear sprocket aswell.

I was hoping not to get really expensive parts - something that will allow me to get by for another year and a bit would be perfect... because I will have my Mums Toyota Corolla to drive next Summer - this bike should get me from campus and back during my last year of Uni, and some random trips to Kingston town centre, during the Christmas and Easter holidays :)

That doesn't sound too bad...

I remember when I went to get a quote from Evans Cycles last year - being a student, they advised me to go somewhere else that was cheaper, lol!

See my "get back on track" parts list. Thats what i would have used at work for this type of job as its the usual stuff halfords stock. Dunno what kinda stock the local bike shop would hit you with though.

The stuff is fine if your just commuting and not doing drops and stairsets(my mate ripped pedals out suntour cranks) but for the money you get what you pay for. As long as you keep the cranks bolts tight and have loctite on them they will stay tight and as long as you clean, degrease and re lube the chain everymonth it will run fine.

I will probably take Jonny69 up on his offer, so hopefully his local place has decent prices :)

My local place is no bad for average stock. If they dont have it they will order it for you. Depending on the supplier it can be with you in a day or two or a god damn week if you are raleigh  They are also around RRP for parts.
You can also bag the "free fitting" if they are nice enough. My mate got his head tube faced and forks fitted for free when he ordered £700 forks through my local, aint exactly the same money but you never know...

Yeah my local shop is pretty good and there's a Halfords just round the corner if I need it.

btw is it a steel frame? I can chop and lowrider it while you're here if you want :D
