My mate is wanting to get a VERY top end rig for gaming that will last him a while.

He has been looking at the dell XPS range and also the Alienware site.

I admit there are very nice machines on there but i feel they are way over priced and will still be outdated in a couple of years (if that) just like anything else will be.

Could i please have a spec for a top end machine with a 24" monitor and just the tower (no keyboard/speaker etc reqd).

No budget limit...(alienware ones are around the £4000 mark ())

Any constructive comments welcomed :)

£4k?

So that's silly stuff like SLi GTX, 8gb RAM, QX9650, all under water (2 loops)

RAID some raptors, and have some big drives for backup and stuff.

then replate the GTXs with new top-end 9 series cards when they come out

bit of a silly budget, qx9650, 8 gig ram, 4tb storage.....basically sort items by price and pick the 1st one on the list, only to find the price is halved in two months.

my opinion would be ask him exactly what he needs it to do to see if you can make a sensible budget

He is wanting a good quality machine that will play new games very well for as long as possible.

I know myself the best thing to do is to build a good machine for around £1500 (inc 24" lcd) then upgrade graphic card(s) when new ones come out.

Out of my league here as tend to be a couple of yeas behind (see sig) as i know thats the sensible way. Nice GTX in my rig and i know it will game fine.

What would £1500ish buy?

^It would buy a similar performing rig to a £4000 one, for a lot lot less money.

Q6600, 8GB ram, Nice mobo, Watercooling ( if wanted ) , GTX / GTS SLi, however much storage is needed, and a nice monitor.

just a quick list, for the price the Q6600 is worth every penny, can easily get to 3.4 with the aftermarket cooler i put in the list.

8gig of ram and x38 mobo because i dont see the advantage of paying extra for the X48 boards,
GTX should manage to deal with most tasks,
2 tb of storage, raid them for better preformance,
bluray and hd drive for when the media becomes more available
decent sound card, after market cooling for the graphics and a nice 24" monitor

as i said quick list :p could get better/cheaper but i will elave that up to someone else if they see fit

use a TRUE not a tuniq

and I'd go for a beefier power supply, as money isn't a problem, so it'll last better ;)

^home basic of course ;)

:) Thats the point i am trying to get across to him....no need to waste money now when it can be put towards future upgrades.

Cheers for all the replies guys its much appreciated indeed.

Now i just got to choose between a gts or a gtx for myself in present rig ready for a 24" upgrade.

if you had 4k to spend, and really want the best of the best, this is what i'd buy, should be more than powerful enough for many months

I have missed out a monitor as that is space dependant, same with speakers, and mouse and keyboard are personal.... spec wise, this is the best stch out now, BUT will not allow SLI. (best wait for a 790i board for that)
