hi all this is a bit of a hypothetical question but has had me wondering
were someone to build a quad sli setup how would/could they get at the unused pci slots covered by the graphic cards? for a sound card, raid card and pci ssd
say for example (noob alert: i have no idea if this would even work but please don't freak out i have no intention of building this)
lets say we get ourselves:

evga sr-x dual socket (socket 2011) motherboard [270-se-w888-kr]

along with four of these

evga geforce gtx 680 classified 4096mb gddr5 pci-e

throw in one of these

asus rog xonar phoebus 7.1 pci-e soundcard

along with

ocz revodrive3 max iops 240gb pci-e ssd

could that even be done?
perhaps some kind of doublewide case with something like PCI Express X16 flexible riser card
to move the 680s away from the mobo so as to have space for the other cards

does a case like this even exist? or is this a job for someone with the skills to make their own case?

i recall a dutch research team did something similar a few years back bout not sure what the story is with what i describe above

again this is just me wondering not considering building anything of this nature
cheers

or use 2*gtx690 instead? ;p

yes that would be an easy way out ;) too easy
lets say it's the future and i want to use 4 gtx790??
i kid again it's a hypothetical
it's more about the fact that you can get mobos with 7 slots is there a way to utilise them all?
cheers again!

4 GPU is ofc maximum per PC, so GPU wise utlising all of the slots is not possible.
But it is easy to use all of them tho, even if you would use 2x690 and would have 5 slots left.

Soundcard, couple of PCI SSDs, + other crap.

no no i know that 4 gpu is the max (with sli) but even what you describe wouldn't be possible without modding as the 2x690s would cover 2 of the slots and leave them unused
