I've just managed to get my hands on an Opty 165 after months of searching for X24600 or 4800's without success!

Now that the 4600 is available once more and possibly 4800s later this week (really Gibbo?), would I be better getting hold of one of the X2 processors and overclocking those less rather than trying to squeeze the Opty?

My existing CPU is a single Winchester core 3500 which runs at 2.2GHz I believe. I sometimes overclock that when gaming using Easy Tune by about 5 or 6% and I'd hate to go through all the hassle (and cost!) of fitting a new processor only to see no benefit!

This is supposed to be an interim upgrade pending a move to C2D later this year, so am not keen to waste but money but I'd hate to think I made the wrong choice now and regret it when the stocks of the X2 s939s are finally exhausted!

Are you going to overclock?

The 165 runs at 1.8Ghz so at stock it will be slower than your 3500 in most current games, which can't take advantage of the second core. It's only when overclocked that you'll start to see the benefits in gaming.

first off why are you definitely moving to C2D later this year when AMD`s new lines will be out by 3rd quarter?? have faith, the playing field will even out eventually ;)

secondly do you know how to overclock from the bios as in general windows based overclocking is pants and usually confined to those who are too afraid for big hairy manly overclocking love. :D

personally i just got myself an opteron 170 from the USA delivered for £109, im in the fortunate position of having a friend out there who posted me one marked "gift" to avoid import charges *insert halo here...* and for overclocking they are nothing short of exceptional.

I have some ideas about real overclocking and I'm reading up on the threads here so willing to learn. Ideally I'd like someone to give me some idiot proof instructions on exactly what settings to change and by how much as a gentle introduction to this scarey world. I dont intend to leave it at 1.8GHz that would be daft, but I dont want to kill it with my ineptitude either!

I know enough to be dangerous...!!!
