Big fat noob question 8-)

Having just sent my board back i have had to remove the CPU and Heatsink/Fan from it(duh:p).

The HSF is a artic cooling freezer pro 7 with the bog standard thermal paste which comes pre applied on it, but now i have removed the cpu and hsf and taken them apart, will i have to buy some more thermal paste from somewhere and reapply or is it ok if i just don't bother and use the existing bits left on the hsf/cpu?

Another question is what is better...Arctic ceramique compund or arctic silver 5? Someone told me that AS5 evaporates after a couple of months so i'm not sure which to get.

Thanks.

You're best getting some more paste, but even the cheap stuff is fine.

AS5 is better than ceramique, but its only a degree or two in it tops. AS5 doesn't evapourate, its a thick metallic paste that kind of "sets" over time.

Don't know if it evaporates, but every few months (say 6) its a good idea to clean & reapply. Nothing much considering you just apply very little, see here ;)

Also, don't forget you'll need something to properly wipe the old gunk off. I use IPA & find it the best :D

I was thinking of getting some of the ArctiClean stuff off ocuk. Would that be suitable? I already have a huge box of lint free wipes :)

To be honest, I just use a bit of tissue, never had a any problems :)

I really wouldn't use the existing bits left on the hsf and CPU. You'll probably end up with sections without any thermal paste and those sections will contain some gaps between the heatsink and the CPU, thus reducing cooling and increasing the temperature of the CPU. I'd clean them both off. I use a lint-free cloth that isn't impregnated with anything, just a plain cloth, and some TIM cleaner from Akasa (anything that doesn't leave a residue will do).

AS5 does not evaporate at the temperatures it is exposed to between a CPU and heatsink, and it probably wouldn't have anywhere to evaporate to anyway, except around the edges. You'd need far higher temperatures to evaporate it.

AS5 is a slightly more effecient thermal interface material than Ceramique, but some people prefer Ceramique because it is electrically inert. AS5 is conductive and some people are concerned that thermal pumping could result in AS5 being squeezed out into the CPU socket and causing a short. I don't know of any cases of that happening, but it is a possibility (though probably only if you use too much AS5).

Thanks guys. I have purchased some Akasa TIM cleaner and AS5..will let you know how i get on when it all arrives :)

I got them this morning and the Akasa tim cleaner worked really nicely...didn't even have to wait 2 minutes just came right off leaving a shining surface ;)

Now my question is where is the best place to store AS5? Dark cupboard ok

I just chuck mine anywhere, I'm sure it won't make the slightest bit of difference :)

I read something about seperation of the solution over time. The AS5 website says to store it in the fridge when not in use but im not going to do that :p
