*** Big Fat Weight Loss Thread ***

Not directly weight loss, but getting to a certain age, I had my bloods done and got the health check phone call yesterday. The Dr said something along the lines of "these phone calls can sometimes take quite a while as we go through what you need to improve... but everything is below average, so well done... bye". I mean, not quite that simple, but not far off. It makes me wish I'd had it done before I started 5 years back so I had a comparison to before I was this fit and healthy.

A bit stuck at the moment as the lifestyle changes saw me lose 11kg without much difficulty, but the weight hasn't moved much the past 2 weeks.
I don't know if it's obvious or not, but I think some folk think if they eat X and exercise Y, then they will lose weight. In fact, you'll change your body to someone that does X and Y. (This also works if X is too high and Y is too low as we will surely have seen with a lot of Joe public) To move it again, lower X or increase Y. My X is quite high because I like eating too much I think. Thankfully, because I cycle my Y is really high too, so I'm reasonably okay.

i have always struggled with my weight tbh never been the smallest but as am getting older now is defo the time to really crack down on my self.
Have you tried logging food in an app like MyFitnessPal. I think that really opened my eyes, when you realise how many calories you should be eating and how many you actually are.

Try it for a week and be really strict with yourself, do your best to log everything (even if you're guessing a little). I think it made a big difference for me.

I know I'll regret it next week, but I'm on a family holiday this week, so logging has paused and I'm allowing myself to snack and eat a lot more than I should. It will probably put 3 or 4lbs on, which I'll then spend 4 weeks removing again  Mind you, I've got another trip away in 2 weeks, but at least it's a cycling trip so I can usually burn off enough that I can just about break even.

Any reason you don't log even on those weeks?
I think it's a few things. The main one is it is a holiday, so almost a reward in that I'm just going to enjoy myself. If I fancy a biscuit, I'm having a biscuit... As I said in the post, I'm 'allowing myself'. It's a conscious decision. It's partly because of a second reason in that it just is harder to log when you're eating out or people are making things for you etc. When at home, I control everything myself, I know how many cals everything is and it is just easier to do. For one day, I would maybe make the effort, but for five days I'd rather just enjoy my holiday.

Yeah, the main worry is the longer you leave it to sort itself out then the more it becomes the "norm".
Yeah, setting norms is really handy. I think I mentioned it before, it's funny sometimes I feel bad for having an extra protein bar between meals and I think back to times when that was the norm and it makes me feel better about it. Just don't let that come back to be the norm.

I think I'd struggle if I had a busier social life. I only really go out to eat once or twice a month and that's when I enjoy myself a little. I think if it was a more regular thing, I suppose for one, I would have less need to make it enjoyable but also I would need to be more strict with myself. Maybe no starters, maybe even no desserts etc.

At over 130 he'll likely be burning more than 2,000 cals a day, I think. As others have said, you want something sustainable. Also, bear in mind, as your weight comes down, you'll need to either exercise more or eat less. Right now you might be at a 500 calorie deficit, but as you drop weight, you'll burn less doing the same walk and your BMR will lower, so in time 400 cal deficit will become maybe 100 cal deficit and eventually maybe zero.

You're coming from almost exactly where I came from. I attacked it hard and upped exercise and lowered cals and kept dropping more than a kilo a week for about 7 months, so it certainly is possible. Honestly, looking back now, I don't know I could do it again. It was HARD! Take it at whatever is comfortable though. Assuming there is no particular rush. Better to change your lifestyle to a sustainable, healthy new one, than hit it too hard, crash, give up and start putting it back on.

where did you start, and where are you now?
I was 137kg and now I'm around 97kg. We've argued about this previously, but I'll just say... I've been going to a gym since I was about 13, so that has made zero difference to me losing weight. That's not to say it's not very important, but IMO it's for general health rather than losing weight.

I'm going to try the 75 HARD thingy
I'd not heard of this before. I think I could do it/not far from currently doing it, except two 45 minute workouts is pretty tough to fit into every day, especially one being outdoor now we're getting cold and wet.

Follow a diet - Yep
Complete two 45-minute workouts, one of which must be outdoors - Well, my weekly total averaged out beats this and its probably more outdoor than in, but not 90 minutes every day
Take a progress picture - this is an interesting one. I don't do this, but I guess could. I'm not sure why though? That's a lot of photos of me looking the same.
Drink 1 gallon of water - I probably don't drink this much, I probably should make more effort.
Read 10 pages of a book - Yep (although one link said this was a self-help/self-improvement book)

It will be interesting to hear how you get on @ic1male
