I ordered a Shuttle case and the attorted gubbins to go inside, including a PowerColor HD 3870 XT.

Now I come to put it all together, I've got to the graphics card and ..ahaha.. it won't fit. The case is too thin for the cooler, and also I've found there's no appropriate power cable for the card either.

Am I right in thinking I can just return the card and get a thinner one (distance-selling regulations and all that)? Also, for the card's power cable, is it just a case of getting an adapter for it or would it need a different PSU?

these things only have 250W PSU's. they're not designed to run enormous monstercards.

that card uses around 80 wats so it depends on how much power is uses on load

as for the card if your not happy with it you can get your money back or change it
if you found some think different.

i have that exact gfx card. it fits fine in a P2 case but your G5 is another matter. best you can do is get a 3850 512mb or one of the very hard to find 3870 single slot solutions. i am not sure if there is a length issue card vs case though. the 9600gt could also be worth a look

The length is fine. I've also found a molex adapter in my spare bits I can use for the power, the only issue is the large cooler.

Are there any aftermarket coolers that are low enough to only use one slot?

Thermalright HR-03 - isnt that huge?

If you wanted a super G card in your computer I would have gone MATX, you can fit a 8800GTx in a micro atx case like the Sugo Sg01/02.

Anyway, thats irrelevant as you bought a Shuttle.

I would send you 3870 back and get a 3850 - even if that fits :)

I was tempted to try and cut a hole in the side, but I think that's beyond my expertise. I'm going to return the card and get a single-slot one, probably a 3850 or a 9600. I don't think I'll need anything as powerful as a 8800GT.

I run a 3850 in my SG33G5, the 250w psu copes fine even with a quad.

I initially had an 8800gt in but I didnt like the fan noise when gamin so switched, so glad I did as the temps are much lower with the 3850 and its soooo much quieter.

Becareful if you buy a generic 3850 as some are not single slot (and they rarely mention it)
