Hey guys,

This question is really for people who build sites for companies etc.

I've been paid by the missus' law firm to knock together their website for them. This is done and so all I need to do is get them to pay for hosting space to go with the domain they already use for email and off they go.

The question is if you were responsible for recommending a host to a company as opposed to choosing one for your own site (which you'd have more 'ownership' of and could manage yourself) would you go for a large generic host, where perhaps the customer service is a bit slower but it is still a 'large' recognised name, or a small host that you know and trust but isn't exactly well known.

That's an oddly phrased question, but hopefully you all get my drift!

For a bog-standard website, i'd go with a large hosting company with a track record of great support. Like surpasshosting, i've always used them, awesome support

Depends on your definition of "large" and "small".

As long as the company is a real company, with real employees, real servers, real contact details, real offices... then there shouldn't really be a problem. That way you can take advantage of superior service, without paying ridiculous prices. :)

We host many small, medium and large companies who use us because they're fedup of large hosts whom they've found frustrating.

Assuming you're choosing an established company with a good track record, size is mostly irrelevant I find :)

Hi SiD the Turtle,

Hope you dont mind me asking a question as Im in the same dilemma regards a friend whose starting a small business. Im more confused on what kinda hosting/bandwidth I need as I dont want him to spend too much on stuff he doesnt need.

Its not an e-commerce site - just net presence...

P.S. Ill probably be stuck administrating it too :p
P.P.S. Ive already registered the domain using 123Reg.com

ps3ud0 - for most requirements any hosting package should be fine - virtually all hosts will allow to upgrade as and when necessary :)

Cheers BeanSprout,

Any hosting providers that are recommended? Just want to make sure they are easily contactable and perhaps noob-friendly...

Also need email facilities (who deals with that? - hosting or domain ppl?)

Might start a new thread if I have further questions - soz StT...
