Hey guys,

It's been a while since ive had to do anything over 15x10 for clients or myself, and had a client request a 24x16. This is also the first time ive printed above 15x10 from the 1DS, and it's really quite good! (:p)

I think big prints deserve big images so those on low resolutions, get a new screen :p

No real reason to this thread other than to say that this has refreshed my love for prints, they look SO much better than on a screen.

Where'd you get it done?

I find that Farnell's up in Lancaster are particularly good, got a couple of 18x12 prints done there for my Uni portfolio the other week and they've come out superb :)
 
just through work, goes through the CeWe labs. Can't complain at the print quality, just wish they did lustre too at this size.
 
I've done some 16x24s on my Epson 3800, its mind blowing the sort of quality you can get from the 1DS as opposed to my standard 1D.. Takes a while though lol, ink isn't cheap either!
 
The last big print I had done was 30" x 20", and that was 'only' a 10mp image from a Pentax K10d...

I was amazed at how it looked, and I couldn't see any pixels either!

I'm always surprised at how big you can make prints with no perceptible loss in image quality, and you're right, images always look better printed, framed and hanging on a wall than on a PC monitor! :)
 
As I said last night, looks great :)

I've really got to start printing up a portfolio. The last time I printed something was from my D200 so we are going back 2 or 3 years! Looks good though at 20x30 over the stairs. Must must must get some more prints done soon though!!
 
I've done a few prints at 12x8 but the other day I decide to go a bit mad and ordered an 18x12 and a 24x16. They look excellent on the wall.

How do you guys make sure prints don't come out too dark? I always find it quite difficult to work out how much I need to brighten an image to make sure it prints bright enough.

Calibrated my monitor. No more print surprises! One of my better photographic purchases that's for sure.

First and foremost calibrate your monitor correctly, there's devices available which will calibrate it perfectly for you but they range in cost. Secondly, get your enlargements printed at a printing lab who you know, ask them what colour profiles are used with their printing equipment and make sure you match the colour profile which you use with theirs. Then you can have an accurate representation of what the colours and even the brightness of the image is going to be.
 
I use a Huey to calibrate my monitor and Loxley to print (which I know the settings of). I have no problems with the colour just the darkness of the print (they are far better than Photobox in both colour and lightness). That's the annoying thing, technically I shouldn't have a problem but somehow I always end up with darker prints if I send them off without lightening them.

Colour profiles still affect how 'light' the images can come out.
 
I had some 28 x 19 prints done from my 1Ds for an exhibition and some 18 x 18 prints of some drum scanned medium format shots and they looked ace, personally I don't think you can appreciate photography properly until it's printed huge and it's up on a nice bright white wall :)

Bit of a revival here but saving a new thread and yes, big prints are awesome.

I found an old 20x16 frame which I want to get a print done for but photobox only go up to 15x10.
What online place can people recommend to get really big ones done?
I found this place which seems like a good price but am interested to hear of others.
