Big Red Button

Obviously I won't refute that but your comment on a gun/syringe being the same as a button didn't feel right to me.

In a simpler way, basically the decision to take your own life rests not on the simplicity or accessibilty of the method but on the underlying psychological reasons of the individual.

If an individual makes the decision to end their life (as opposed to the more common 'cry for attention/help/angst') then the presence of a red button will have little impact on that decision.

So your saying that everyone having access to this button wouldn't increase suicide rates then, simple yes or no?

Would it increase suicide attempts?.....no.

Would it increase the 'success rate' of those attempts.....possibly.

Although I would suspect that many 'attemptees' would stay away from such a guaranteed method.

There was a point where I'd have taken the option if it was available, so I'd have been supporting the statistic of it increasing the attempts, I wouldn't have met the age criteria for the question though.

In order for it to not increase suicide attempts (to a statistically significant amount at least), I'd first say the age threshold would have to be raised quite a bit more to around 27+. I don't have much more faith in the mindset of a 20 year old than I do a teenager, still too naive in general at this point.

Though I say this without entirely thinking through what life would be like if everybody got such a button, and therefore some time to reflect and adjust to it after the initial darwinian demonstrations around them given them a better idea of its true potential.

Trust No One!

Well then i'd rig my flat with explosives to kill anyone who tries to push my button.

But on a more serious note, if you want to die, wouldnt you find a lot of things to do. Free of responsibility, free of consequences... You can do whatever you want now, you can punch your boss? etc etc.

Lot of things to do before you die.

On gaurd duty we have a button, I assume its an emergency button, but there is a book next to it telling you that all sorts of things will happen if you press it.

I.E "Press the button and magical unicorns will appear"

After 12 hours and 7 days of sitting in a little box, it becomes more and more tempting.

If I was stuck with that button my whole life I would've pressed it, so yes I'd be dead.

No, I wouldn't press the button, I'd still be alive. Nothing in my life has ever caused me to think that I'd rather be dead.
