Big Red Button

No I wouldn't have pressed it, confused by anyone who says they would have, it's no different to standing on the edge of a tube platform or out on a high balcony or bridge.

Jumping off those things would end your life quickly and painlessly as well. You may think what if but people who aren't suicidal / have mental issues don't intentionally jump / kill themselves out of curiosity!

I'd be alive...

It's quite simple to kill yourself. Red button just makes it a tiny bit more convenient and doesn't really make a difference to the decision at all.

I've been through some pretty grim times as have most people.. but ending my life has never even crept into my mind. I don't think many people would press it who weren't already going to kill themselves in another way anyway.

I'd be more concerned about pressing it by accident somehow.

Wow, this thread has got a bit dark...

When I first posted, I thought it was just meant as a "There's this button, would you press it?", but it has turned into a "Have you ever thought about committing Suicide?"

I wouldn't have pushed it.

because its the easy way out it takes balls to face up to your problems and over come them instead of letting then take over your life.

Being in the state of mind in which you'd rather kill yourself (because most and all other possibilities are usually exhausted) does not mean it's easy. You have to realise that it's the end, that you can no longer forsee anything getting better, you might have tried already for a decade in hopes that things might change, that you might change, that you might get help.

But the simple fact is not everyone gets a rosey deal like others, not everyone's effort grants equal or greater reward, not everyone who's tried as hard as you will end up the same.

Being put in that position is hard enough as it is, but to get to the point you'd rather die? The only thing stopping you at that point is belief things can get better, but when life throws nothing back at you and you're simply tired of it, why the hell not?

Whats wrong with good old fashioned suicide booth's, and in answer to your question i would have probably pressed it when drunk or raging at a game.

Nope, I've lead a luckily happy life.

Saved a friend from attempted suicide though, scary shizzle.

Am I the only person with a big red button or do other people have one?

It's difficult to say, as one of my mates would have probably pressed their red button, and I think that could then influence others to push their red button. So even if you say you wouldn't, if everyone had one, then you might do.

Anyone who posts in this thread and is still alive clearly wouldnt have pressed the button.

If you have half a brain it is not hard to kill yourself so if you really wanted to, you would have done it already.

So, in answer to your question OP, no, no one who is alive would have pressed it.

I would have carefully taken it apart to learn its secrets then turned it into a weapon with which to take over the world.

It's all relative to peoples circumstances, everyone has difficult times but for some those difficult times can stay with you, be it mentally or psychically. Some get over things much easier than others, or have the support of friends & family to get them through...

I don't think I'd be here though if there was a 'big red button'...but thankfully there isn't and the morning after is a different day, regardless of how bad you feel at that point you'll not feel that way the day after, but by then you could've pressed it.

Suicide is something you'd have to plan, which causes fear & anxiety...having a button in the heat of the moment I'd say is far less fearsome than wondering how to and if it'll cause a lot of pain or fear you'll not be successful.

Interesting how so many people are saying they would have ended their life in the past if they had this red button.

Why didn't you end your life without the red button? Plenty of painless ways to die that actually exist.

I guess I'm saying that I don't think many people would have pressed it.

i clicked on this thread thinking about the Sky's TV "red button" feature, and i read this pretty dark post. was not expected.

to answer the original topic, oh yes i would have pushed about 4 years ago quite easily, but as istands now im glad no such button exists as im loving life now

Aside from me not being 20, I could well imagine pressing it after being unhappy for a long period - why should 'present me' go through unhappiness on the off chance that 'future me' might end up happy, especially if there doesn't seem to be any hope at the time - it's not like 'present me' gets anything from it... Given that practical concerns cease to be relevant, I think the major hindrance would be thinking about family who would be sad/disappointed/embarrassed/etc by the action, but in general family and friends who wouldn't understand, and would just see it as a weak action of a deranged mind. But if you ended up feeling that people would understand (if you explained to them, or left a comprehensive suicide note or something), or you ceased to care for those effects for whatever reason, then I would see no reason not to push the button if you felt like it at the time.

- So, I expect I would end up dead.

See the post directly above yours.

Suicide takes planning, effort and fear/anxiety of possible failure. It's a very different story if people have the option to end it in an instant without those things.

On a side note, how do we know death by suicide is painless? like throwing yourself in front of a an express train, or blowing your head off or jumping from a cliff?
