Big typhoon only 4C better than stock

Hi,

Any thoughts on this?

I've just spent the past 4 hours moving my PC into a Antec P180 and a installing a Big Typhoon.

I was expecting a miracle in cooling however the CPU temp is only 4C better than stock @ the low case fan setting, 5C better at the medium case fan setting.

So in a warm room @ 24C my opteron 165 @ 2.4Ghz 1.35v is Dual Priming @ 46C.

I was expecting a little more in this case with this cooler. I've removed and refitted the cooler several awkward times, in the end I retained the retention module and screwed the bracket down to that. It seem physically stable and there is no movement in the fixings.

Previously in a cheap £30 case with PSU I was getting 50C Dual prime @ 1.35v using the stock opteron heatpipe cooler.

anyone else have a Big typhoon on a Dual core CPU ? would like to know some other temps etc.

Cheers

Originally was using an Akasa EVO 120mm and had my 4400 S&M stable at 2.6GHz and temps going over 60C. Went over to the BT and was able to get upto 2.7GHz stable and load temps of about 61-62C.

To be honest, you're probably not pushing it hard enough.

Yeah, heatpipes have a certain temperature at which they kick in. A reason why the old AC Freezers used to be poor at stock temps but excellent at load when comapred with HSF's without heatpipes - the same applies here.

that's probably quite a bad sign!

seriously though, an overclocked chip running at 46c when on full load... thats not bad mate!

Your mobo is probably reading the wrong temp too so as long as its stable I wouldn't care, just push it until it stops working then pull it back a bit!

Thanks for the feedback guys,

The 4 heatpipe cooler was quite good, the first cooler I've ever owned which could drop idle temps below the mainboard temp by a few degrees and @ 2.6Ghz 1.45v it would hold 53C in a cool room but with the heating on full blast temps climbed towards 60C.

My previous case had 5 x 80mm fans + 80mm CPU, Nbridge and 7800GTX so it was rather noisy. The Antec is a fair degree quieter but not silent by any stretch of the imagination even with fans all set to low.

Morning Prime temps are 42C with a room temp of 20C so the difference has remained a constant 22C

Once it's settled in for another day or so I'll start pushing harder and see how it performs @ 2.6/2.7Ghz with a little more vcore

Thanks again

I think you were expecting too much as a 4c drop is a good improvement. This can make all the difference between a stable setup especially when the weather gets warmer. If the rig is also quieter then you have nothing to gripe about. I think also as the stock cooler on the newer cpu's has improved it makes these specialist coolers seem only marginally better.
