Biggest console related mistake of my life...

Neither are good without a PC, you can't play Divx or Xvid on a PS3 alone and you can't convert the files without a PC.

They take such a big hit in usability if you don't have a PC connected to them.

You can play Divx, Xvid or whatever on a PS3, Just that you have to use Linux (no big problem) with VLC player installed though.

They are HD ts files and requires HDTVpump, no transcode needed. They are direct feeds from the PC.

Just HDTV pump and it will let media centre stream .ts files to the 360? Nice!!! I've been trying to figure out how to get ts files to my ps3 or 360 and the only way I've come up with is 12-hour re-codes lol.... cheers for that! :)

Yeah but really you're probably going to have a PC in the house if you're gonna bother with doing all that I'd have thought.

Average person won't even know how to set up the transcoding and such so really without a PC or some knowledge of getting Linux on the PS3 and using it, it really isn't a good media hub.

Well just Divx/Xvid wasn't my main point really, just without a PC it severely cripples the usability for both 360&PS3.

the average person wouldnt know how to set up codecs and a media front end on a pc either tbh

You would need a pc anyway because how else are you going to get the videos to put on your ps3 or 360??? (im not including linux on the ps3)

Actually I was comparing them without having to turn on a PC. I used media centre before on the 360 and it still wasn't as fast as the XMB, there is a loading icon shown for a second in that video before the movie starts. The 360 was also too loud to be able to use it as a media centre.

The 360 had an awful games selection for most of its first year, so this no games on the ps3 lark ain't a valid argument. Buy the elite op and learn from this experience, research all major purchases before splashing the cash. Too many people on this forum seemed to have had their head stuck in the sand before buying the ps3 and then when they realise the games won't start to appear until xmas, they start walking around with a whats going on here look slapped all over their face, spouting things we already know.

We don't care about the first year, the two consoles are being compared in their current state. If you're saying the PS3 has no games right now is an invalid argument because you felt the same was for the 360 in the same timeframe without taking account the current state of the consoles' software libraries - then have a rolleyes, dear chap.

I agree, im on my 4th 360, each has varied slighty in volume but non of them have been usable for me as a media centre/hub. I could never take it seriously for media use and im surprised MS can either..

Thing is, between December 2005 and December 2006 we saw the following on the Xbox360
:
Project Gotham Racing 3
Burnout Revenge
Pro Evolution Soccer 6
Gears of War
Dead Rising
Test Drive Unlimited
Condemned
GRAW
Hitman: Blood Money
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Oblivion
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Tomb Raider: Legend

Amongst others, so it wasn't a poor first year at all really, it's just a made up story. Come November 11th we can compare 12-month releases between Xbox360 and PS3, the PS3 hasn't been out 12 months yet so it's hard to criticise it as such.

In reference to what your saying the 360 is a good multimedia device when working in conjuction with a pc, as it is on its own then ps3 is vastly superior, it supports more formats, allows movie files to be transfered to its harddrive, blu-ray, dvd upscaling, cd upscaling, sacd playback, card reader to transfer and display photos etc and built in wireless for streaming anywhere around the house and so on. WMV playback, lol wake up do you think that was gonna happen?, and for divx neither machine supports it or will ( den of the pirate you see ), so 360 is good when attached to a pc but not great at all without it, ps3 is great without a pc even better when streaming from one.

I think my idea of 'media' and yours are 'vastly' different.. the only thing technically the 360 can't do (swapping BR for HD-DVD) from your vastly superior list is transfer files to the system HDD, and play SACD.. hardly 'vastly superior'..

When, and I hope they do, sort out a good Linux based media front end with codecs for everything from HD-DVD/BR to XVids to DVD ISO's for the PS3, then it will be a good media machine..

Each to their own, my experience of 'media' is different to yours, my needs are clearly much more, as I still havent come close to replacing my HTPC with the PS3, and probably wont until the linux software becomes mature..

ok im just gonna ask a few questions regarding my ps3,

1: Do you think Developers will stick by the PS3 and try to learn how to develop properly for it (and take advantage of the cell and gpu? with not as much jaggies :P)? Or just keep doing crappy ports that dont run well.

2: Do you think it start getting games that look as good as gears of way?

3: Between now and the end of te month, what games are the best currently, thinking rainbow six vegas?

Thinking about sticking with my ps3 for just a couple more months.

1, I would say that developers will definately start to develop better games for the PS3 with a little time. You are bound to get a handful of ports this early into a consoles lifecycle, they are usually ports from last gen systems though but being as though the 360 has been out for so long it's a no brainer to port from that too.

2, It's a difficult one to answer as the 360 has a better GPU than the PS3's but then the Cell was designed to do GPU and CPU tasks so it could possibly add more grunt into the equation if used correctly. Also the 360 has shared memory of 512MB whereas the PS3 has 256MB for GFX and 256MB for system but iirc the gfx can tap into the system memory a bit and vice versa with some clever programming. It's really down to the devs and how much time they put into optimising the game on PS3. Sony have also improved the development package to a great degree compared to previous consoles - this should enable devs to get more out of the system IMO.

3, As far as I can see there's only four games due out before the end of this month. I will probably pick up Tiger Woods and I quite fancy Nascar too. Rainbow Six is pretty good if you like FPS on a console, also Motorstorm & F1 if you liek racing.
