Biggest console related mistake of my life...

I did the same thing thinking there would be plenty of games to play because I'd not played half of the multiformat games anyway. Bit of a mistake as the PS3 gets a bum deal with the ports and the framerate struggles.

It's not very good as a media centre either. It can't play WMV which is what the vast majority of my library is. Even though it can play MP4 video, it doesn't do that as well as the 360.
Overall the 360 is a better all-round package for gaming. It's just little things like an ergonomic controller, with labels for the buttons being the right way up when you tilt the controller towards you that MS have got right.

i would say at the moment its only a good idea to buy a ps3 if-

-you have plenty to spend
-are very concerned about reliability
-have a good ps2 game collection, the upscale is superb imho.

too buy it for the game selection it currently has is a questionable choice.

I agree, I've used my PS3 mostly for playing PS2 games upscaled with a wireless controller and it's brilliant.

I love the XMB and I don't understand why someone can prefer the Xbox 360 as a media centre. It is all the subtle touches that I like and it is much faster than the Xbox GUI. When I use my 360 it takes a second or two just to go to a different menu and its a much more messy structure to be honest.

The poor software library agruement is pretty poor, it has a great lineup of games this year. If you are still playing plenty of PS2 games and have an HDTV I would buy a PS3 if you can afford it.

I can't speak for other PS3 owners on these forums but I know that when I bought mine I knew it was a long term investment, rather than thinking about what games were out right now. There's enough to keep most people going at the moment with a very good lineup due out in the near future - plus you have the added bonuses of being able to play upscaled PS2 games and BD's.

It's like I have said before - how many games can you play at once anyway?

Good point, I've been catching up on all the PS2 games I missed that I wanted to play at the time but just simply couldn't because there were so many good games on the console. VF5 is incredibly deep and it's a game I can go back to now and again without becoming bored. I think anyone who has bought a PS3 knows that the big games are coming and anyone who didn't made a silly mistake.

I got shot of my 360 because of the reliability issues, had the PS3 a few weeks now and its great and don't regret it. I'm loving F1 and CoD3 not even touched RFOM yet other than a 10 minute taster. I've not played online yet although its all set-up ready to go.....

Admittedly there isn't that many games about at the moment but enough for me I bought it so it would last me acouple of years and knew the bigger games would be a few months away. I guess if I had nothing to do all day but play games I would be bored by now but I only get acouple of hours every night or so I can't moan.

I have to disagree with people when they say the PS3 is a poor media centre.

I have access to all my music, my photos and it's bloody good at streaming video, all from an easy to navigate XMB (just wish they'd add folders) :)

Besides, I'm pretty sure you can add WMV support to the PS3 by downloading a small file, same with ATRAC? Don't quote me though.

I agree with Joebob as I bought mine as a long term investment.. actually got it as a BluRay player primarily, so the lack of games at the moment doesn't bother me too much.

Anything that can handle "Full HD" 1080p, play movies and is a decent games console, whilst running near-silent gets my vote. That was my biggest gripe against the 360 as a media centre - the noise.

many criticised sony for trying to make the ps3 a media centre but they really have done a bloody good job at that. just a shame that if used as a standalone games console its a expensive beast.

i know for a fact that when i do purchase one a lot of gaming time will be spent playing ps2/ps1 games i never got round to playing in there respective gens.

looking forward to it.

I think the PS3 is a pretty poor media center, same with the 360.

I just prefer using my PC to either, especially if you have a HDTV you can easily hook it up to the big screen.

As Jihad said, the PS3 is a poor media machine, the 360 is better in many ways, especially if used as a MCE device.. very flash front end.. but ultimately for a proper media machine, a stand alone streamer/pc is the only decent solution out there..

Blu-ray movies are no substitute for a poor software library - just get the 360.

The 360 had an awful games selection for most of its first year, so this no games on the ps3 lark ain't a valid argument. Buy the elite op and learn from this experience, research all major purchases before splashing the cash. Too many people on this forum seemed to have had their head stuck in the sand before buying the ps3 and then when they realise the games won't start to appear until xmas, they start walking around with a whats going on here look slapped all over their face, spouting things we already know.

I was pretty occupied with the 360, the trouble is everything on the PS3 is pretty much available on a cheaper console, and they are superior versions in most cases.

In reference to what your saying the 360 is a good multimedia device when working in conjuction with a pc, as it is on its own then ps3 is vastly superior, it supports more formats, allows movie files to be transfered to its harddrive, blu-ray, dvd upscaling, cd upscaling, sacd playback, card reader to transfer and display photos etc and built in wireless for streaming anywhere around the house and so on. WMV playback, lol wake up do you think that was gonna happen?, and for divx neither machine supports it or will ( den of the pirate you see ), so 360 is good when attached to a pc but not great at all without it, ps3 is great without a pc even better when streaming from one.

Neither are good without a PC, you can't play Divx or Xvid on a PS3 alone and you can't convert the files without a PC.

They take such a big hit in usability if you don't have a PC connected to them.

trade it in for a elite, 3 year warrenty, elites have the new GPU heatsink and still you get 3 yr warrenty, Buy another Ps3 next xmas and you'll have a cheaper PS3, lots more 2nd hand games to choose from and a much wider games choice and exclusives to pick from.

As for as media centers, if you have a PC then Xbox wins hands down, i've used both with PC and the xbox360 is miles better suited as a media extender. Ps3 is better for photo's playback, but i find the XBM to be rather messy and cluttered

The only thing i really miss and really enjoyed with the PS3 was how silent it was and how sexy it looked.
