Bike insurance same as Car insurance?

Well I'm moving down to london in a month or so and so it means I have to sell my car. However, I really want to keep an insurance policy going to build up my NCB. The bloke at the insurance company has just put an idea in my head that I think I'm going to do, just need to make sure it'll work ok.

Basically I'm going to get about an £800 rebate on my insurance when I cancel it. When I asked if there was any way to keep the policy going he asked if I owned a bike, which I don't, but he said if I ran one I could transfer the policy over to that, and the policy would carry on as normal therefore building up my NCB. So I am thinking about bying a dirt cheap bike and insuring it for basic fire and theft with some of the rebate (don't need at this point as wasnt planning on getting it back as I only needed to sell my car as of yday). Obviously I would just leave the bike on my parents drive un touched and un-riden.

I figure that the rebate should cover the cost of a bike and the insurance and still get a decent amount back. How much does it cost to insure a small bike?

Would this count as a 'normal' NCB that could be used in the future?

erm >I didnt think they were the same, I have both bike and car policys, and the NCB cant be taken across between the two.(have two seperate NCB's
on the bright side if I have an off on the bike, the car policy isn't effected.:)

edit. small bike insurance, need cbt (or full licience)to insure it (90 quid), and proberbly about 400 quid for 125 for the year(guess, cos thats what I paid)

if they are happy to transfer the ncd from your car to your bike policy then that's unusual but cool. Bike insurance is SUBSTANTIALLY more than car insurance especially if the bike isn't locked away in a garage with a big chain and a ground anchor.

You will of course no longer have insurance for your car and you can't use the same ncd on two policies at the same time, so if you renew your car insurance you'll have 0 ncd.

Just to clarify a few points

• I will be selling my car but want to carry on some sort of insurance policy to build up NCB
• Have a full licence to insure it
• I doubt it will be more, I currently pay £1600 on my car
• Won’t need to renew the car or use it as I will be selling it
• The bike be kept in a garage

The idea to be able to build up a NCB that I will be able to transfer back to a car when I need one in a few years. Don’t want to be 25 and want to buy a fairly powerful car with NCB in the future.

Cheers for any help though.

Im going to buy an SV650S soon and in the insurance is pretty much half my car insurance. Its around £500 a year for me to insure the SV at 21. The SV is one of the cheaper bikes to insure though, I think it was around £1000 for a CBR, that was with motorcycle direct.

All depends on the company/policy , my friends Bike insurance went up because his car was stolen

all claims effect all policies, you may not lose no claims bonus but you still have to declare you have made a claim, they are gits, all of them.

Should be able to get a small 50c motorbike and insure it for £200 I would have thought, you dont need a license to insure it, just tell them you have a provisional but dont have your cbt yet, shouldnt be an issue.

Most insurance companies I have been with tho will not transfer car to bike or bike to car ncbs.
If they will take it up :D

This was the info I was looking for! I wouldn't be getting a CBR or anything, like above it will be a 50cc old thing!

That was the other thing, I don't have any sort of bike licence cbt etc (gave wrong info above), but it would seem a bit silly that you can't insure it to get one, after all you can insure a car before you have a full licence and how would you get the bike to the test center with no insurance.

I need to find out from Direct Line then whether they will transfer car-->bike and bike-->car NCB's.
