Bike Locks

Abus D-Shackle locks.. Expensive but robust and secure. Wouldn't use anything else and they last years. I have a long shaft which makes it easier to lock through the wheel, frame and mount where the bikes are close together.

The problem is of course, is the lock is only as good as what your locking to. Our new Cycle point lockup uses tubular Galvanised steel which seems as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

If you've got a regular locking point (and bike) that allows for a mini D-lock, then I can thoroughly recommend this one. Smaller and lighter than the usual D-locks, but still Gold-rated (if that means anything!); the size means you can't get a hydraulic jack into it.

I have a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini and an Abus Steel-O-Chain. They're heavy, but on the plus side, they probably discourage people from having a go at stealing my bike. I know it's harsh, but I'd rather make the other bikes look like easier targets so they leave mine alone.

Kryptonite something or other here too, very good lock, weighs a tonne though, nothing but the most professional crews will get through it, prolly looking at things like plasma cutters or hydraulic cutting equipment, bolt crops wouldn't do squat imo.

Or a battery grinder would get through most stuff in seconds, but most thieves won't splash out on that kit.

Kryptonite are definitely the best value for money. There are probably stronger D locks out there but Kryptonite are the best compromise in my opinion.

Most bike thiefs would just use a big bolt cutters right?

...but there is no way an bolt cutters would cut through a Steel D lock?
I was reading the other day someone had a kryptonite lock broken allegedly they will pay for the bike if you can show them the broken lock.

any smart thiefs will just saw your frame in half knowing its the fork and drive train worth money

Saw a frame in half, I'm not laughing but, providing your bike is locked in a secure place, people are passing and it's seen, I would find it hard to imagine no one noticing someone cutting a locked bike apart.

it doesn't take long to saw aluminium you can be though before anyone realises whats going on and most people mind their own business so won't question you anyway.

I'm just saying if someone wants you bike no lock is going to stop them at the end of the day

ive put a D lock through with a hacksaw in under 10 mins. although that would attract some attention on a high street.. :D

wasnt a kyrptonite one, dont know if that makes the blindest.

It's worth watching some videos on Youtube to see how quickly people can get a cheap lock off a bike, or even a moderately expensive one. Bolt cutters, a car jack, an angle grinder...
