Bike Locks

these seem good but expensive

The parabolic shackle makes it impossible to burst the lock with a bottle jack, the material is bolt crop resistant and the square shackle and double bolt mechanism means if you cut through one side of the shackle it still won’t open, so two cuts need to be made to get through this one.

In our first round of tests we tried cropping, which barely left a mark. Setting the hammer and chisel on the lock just caused cosmetic damage to the barrel and twisting the shackle didn’t open the treasure chest either – a confident pass for the Granit’s first five minutes.

Our portable angle grinder took a whole 4min 43sec to get through both sides of the shackle
about £70
EDIT: it got a gold security rating from solds secure which seems to be the company insurance companies take notice of which puts it as a lock insurance companies trust for bikes over £1,600

Most bike thiefs would just use a big bolt cutters right?

...but there is no way an bolt cutters would cut through a Steel D lock?

Bolt cutters will go through them in seconds - see Captain Cropper on You Tube. If it's under 18mm then it can be cut. Once over 18mm the croppers can't open wide enough.

Thieves will do it in public and people will ignore them as 'not their problem' or they won't want to confront someone wielding a set of 36" croppers in case it kicks off.

A friend of mine posted some CCTV footage on Facebook of bikes getting nicked outside his work in broad daylight. The thieves got through the locks in seconds.

I'm amazed anyone can find that surprising considering people steal cars and motorbikes in broad daylight.

push Bike's are an easy target as you don't have to snap the steering lock and barrel out the lock or hotwire it like you would a moped..

back when I was half my age I lived in a rough area and people would happily walk into a supermarket carpark snap the steering lock on a motorbike and then push it off as fast they could to a quiet spot whilst people around them were sticking there shopping in the boots of their cars etc and no one paid any attention

I'll just mention again a cheeky trick that some thieves are using. They will find a bike they want, and their own D-lock on. Owner comes back, finds they can't move the bike and leaves it overnight or over the weekend. During this time, thief comes back and removes owners lock and takes bike. Sometimes they even lock a crappy old bike to make it look like a "mistake".

I've had this happen when my bike was parked outside my office. This was late on a Friday so obviously the thief hoped i would leave it over the weekend. Luckily a couple of passing PCSOs helped me out by getting hold of a hacksaw from a local work site they knew of, and helped me hack the offending lock off, the remains of which I left for the thief to see :D

I could have sworn I posted about exactly this, but I guess it must have been in the road bike thread.
