Today I realised by bike is 800 miles overdue for it's 11k service :( Rather than pay someone £200 I thought I'd do it myself.

I think I'll be doing oil & filter, air filter, brake pads (front & back), brake fluid and maybe replacing the coolant.

Questions:
- Can anyone recommend any decent stands to use when working on a bike
- Where is good to get parts, M&P and Motorcycle Parts were 2 places I saw in the quick Google I did.

Any thoughts welcome!

Fluids and coolant I have always bought from Halfords.
Oil filters usually from a local bike shop they are usually no more than £5, same goes for spark plugs, but you could find them online too.
Air filters its worth getting a BMC or similar then you don't ever need to get another just clean it.
Brake Pads is best online, I would just go for EBC unless you do fast road track use.

Thanks for all that.

The bike is an SV650S K8 (see sig). I don't have any bobbins at the moment, I didn't know if some stands came with some sort of generic attachment which negated the need for them. If not I'll get some bobbins.

I'll have a hunt for bike shops around Chesterfield, not sure if I can buy service parts from CMC? If no we've got a Halfords.

yeah Paddy you can get service parts from CMC, I have in the past for my Yam, only thing of course doing it yourself doesnt get you is the stamp in the service book.

Silly as I just had my Fazer 600 serviced at CMC for £119 and for the most part, i could have done most of it myself. Just wanted that stamp in the service book for if and when I sell the bike. Is that being anal do you think ?

I just think, when it comes to selling the bike (if, as tempted to keep this as was my 1st and she's perfect) that dealers/buyers want or prefer to see the stamp. Which I dont think is fair as most of us are capable of doing basic servicing tasks

main thing on any engine is always the oil and filter. :)

as long as you change these regular there won't be any issues. always make a note of the mileage when you do ought so you've got a record for future owners when you sell and keep the receipts. :)

Yes, some stands come with rubber lined cups that sit under the swing arm. However bobbins give more security and stability and they are cheap and easy to fit so it makes sense to fit them IMO. The SV has M8 fittings in the swingarm, there are loads of bobbins that will fit perfectly (e.g. have a search on eBay for "Suzuki Bobbins", lots for £6 in p&p).
