Thanks, the malt is a nice looking/specced bike (as you know) which is whay its on my list. Just a little concerned with not trying before buying. Let us know how you get on :)

expect a full report with tonnes of pics from my point n shooter once Maltina is here :D

Right, i thought i better drag this thread back up :)

I'm looking to get this next month now, i'm still undecided though :D

What sort of frame size would i be looking at? (i'm about 6ft3).

Current contenders are:
- Specialised Rockhopper Disc - ~£650
- Scott Reflex 10 - ~£680
- Orange P7s - ~£800

That's just about in preference order (i'd really like the Orange, but it might be a bit much money at the moment unfortunately! though i guess it's only £150 more, but i have to be careful saying that, as that's how budgets get blown away :D).

What's a good helmet to get as well? and will i need any more kit?

Im a bit fan of Specialized, so id recommend that, maybe the version up if you can afford it?

Other kit, lights, lock etc?

If i'm going for the Specialised it'll be that version as it saves some money :)
I don't need lights... it's virtually summer :D

Matt - if you can, try out the bike for size. I bought an XL and it's a touch on the large side. The Rockhopper 21" (L) should be a good close.

I'm beginning to think that's the one :) The Rockhopper Comp 21inch is not available at the moment, so it would just be the standard disc.

The Scott Reflex 10 is too short, so that's out :(
Marin aren't so great on the spec, so they're out.

The Specialized place do have a very well spec'd 2004 Stumpjumper FSR Pro though... but that would be a bit over budget, and probably not wise :p

GT is a no go, mainly due to me hating the look of their frames, that might be a rubbish reason, but it is a reason :p

What don't you like about the GT frames/bikes? The Triple Triangle Frame makes them tough without adding weight.

The kit on the 2006 GT Avalanche 1.0 and Expert is very good for not a lot of money:

# rame: GT triple triangle design 6061 Aluminium with pressure formed downtube and is disc compatible
# Forks: Rock Shock TORA U-turn with rebound adjustment
# Gears: Shimano Deore LX front derailleur and 9 speed SRAM X9 rear derailleur
# Shifters: SRAM X.9 Trigger
# Chainset: Truvativ 5-D with Powerspline 44 32 and 22 tooth rings
# Brakes: Shimano Deore Hydraulic Disc brakes front and rear with Deore leavers
# Wheels: Shimano Quick Release Disc hubs with WTB Speed disc rims
# Tyres: Tioga yellow Kirin Front and Blue Dragon rears
# Bars: GT 6061 butted aluminium adventure bar
# Stem: GT Design Tig Welded threadless with 4-bolt face plate
# Saddle: SDG New Bel Air
# Seat Post: Alloy Micro Adjust

For £800 you can get the bottom range composite bikes but they lack strength and are very hard to repair if you bin in hard and damage the frame.

Oh and how can you say you don't like the look of this? (My baby!)
