Will be upgrading to my A" license in the summer so will be able to go up to 47 bhp

Bit of a change from my 14 bhp cbf 125 ;)

So in lieu of that I need to have a see what sort of bikes i will be allowed to ride.

Is it better to pick a slightly bigger bike and get it restricted or is there a lot of choice in this region so I should l go for a bike that is already under 47 bhp?

Thanks

My advice would be to get a bike that is up to the new legislation. I can just see the rozzers stopping you to check that your bike is in fact de-restricted.

A whole 47?!?!

Congrats on moving up :)
Have a look at the ninja 400/300/whatever they are. I had the 250 and it was a hoot while I was on a restricted 33bhp licence.

I know 47 is a big number :D

yeah my plan was a ninja 250 when the old rules were still in but thought as it allows a few more bhp would be silly not too!

even with less power you'll find the 250 is a very capable machine.

check out a few track videos of the 250 and you'll be surprised what it can keep up with!

There are some 600's that are low power enough or won't loose much when restricted. Think the kawak very is one.

The new Kawasaki Z800e is available in a 47bhp version apparently! I'd be tempted to go for something that either needs no restriction or only a low level or restriction. That way you get an engine that pulls all the way up the the red line, rather than going flat as a pancake, which makes it more fun to ride. The Sv650 and ER6 have to be a contenders for a larger engined bike. If you just want a commuter type bike then a GS500F would need to restriction, or a CB500 would need a small amount of restriction.

The old 400cc sports bikes (e.g. CBR400, VFR400, GSX400) are fun to ride and would also need minimal restriction, but most of them are getting pretty old and they are physically quite small bikes, which is a consideration if you are fairly tall.

does the gs500 need a restriction? on here:

It says it has exactly 47bhp. But I am a bit concerned about the low reviews about build quality and cheap materials.

With bikes like the sv 650 are they easy to get restricted? how much is it likely to cost? And will it ruin the bike due to the changes to power: weight ratio?
Don't want to get a bigger bike only for it to be a ruined experience due to the restriction.

Brackish: what kawasaki are you talking about, can't find a Kawasaki very?

Additionally, what sort of mileage should I be looking for on this bike? As I don't want to pick one up for the engine to go after 1000 miles.

Cheers

K3+ SV650's are restriced via ECU. Older SV650's are restricted by washers sitting in the 2 inlets from the engine to the carb. If you find one that's been looked after (serviced regularly) and you keep on top of it, you will have a work horse machine.

That was a typo on my part, I meant to say "no restriction" rather then "to restriction" :D Yes the GS500 is a cheap and cheerful bike, but hundreds of them have lived hard lives for use as loaner bike for direct access test and they survive. The finish is not great, so if you want something as a long term keeper rather than just to see out your restricted power period it might not be the best choice.

The SV650 can be restricted either by ECU or by washers and a throttle stop, though the low power ECU is a better solution overall. I don't know if a 47bhp ECU is going to be available however, the current ones are obviously 33bhp.

Depending on cost the Honda NC700 chucks out 47bhp and is on the DSA list.

Not a bike I'd buy but it does have some useful features. I like the storage area, where a petrol tank is traditionally, which takes your helmet, stop s******ing at the back please, and the petrol tank being under the pillion seat.

I just watched a video on YouTube where someone bought an automatic version. That's deffo not my cuppa.

Honda sacked me from their sales team.

edit: Come on OcUK, whilst I understand a racially abusive term for black people being censored, a term for how Muttley laughs, even though containing the aforereferred (new word I just made up) word, isn't an offensive word.

Well the time has come, Got my test booked in for next week!
Got a couple of days training booked too just to make sure I've not picked up any bad habits :)

Also has anyone got any tips for my test, gotta do both the mod 1 and mod 2.

And that means it is time to get really stuck in with choosing a bike :D
Has anyone got any other recommendations or just the same bikes that have already been mentioned?

I appreciate all the help guys
