Bike training what path did you take?

How many of you went straight from cbt without ever being on 2 wheels before though a das course and pass theroy mod1,2 without riding your own 125 for experience 6 months in between ?

The reason i ask is people suggest the best way to go about getting a full license is :
cbt->secondhand125(to practice on for 6 months)->theroy->das->mod1->mod2->sell 125 get big boys bike

However 125's are overpriced can be difficult to find one nearby at a good price and with everyone <21 trying to get their restricted license before 2013 make them in even shorter supply.Is it still the best way to go despite the cons?
 
If you're old enough, and not an idiot, I see no reason to not just do what I did, which was no experience > CBT > Theory > DAS > Full licence thank you very much. This was only about 4-5 years ago, but before this Mod 1 & 2 licence was brought in.

I didn't have the extra funds available to get a 125 for a while, run that, then have even more money to finish off and do a DAS, only to then sell the 125 at a loss, then try and buy a bigger bike.

I got what I considered to be a sensible first bike, a Bandit 650 K1, was a fantastic bike. I had one accident on it, which would have happened no matter what CC the bike was, it was simply down to inexperience. However, it wasn't serious, and I've not had an off since in over 4 years. I do know plenty of people who went down the CBT > Ride for 6 months for experience > etc etc route, and they've had more accidents simply because the only training they've had is a 1 day CBT, where as I had 5 days of intensive training.
 
Myself, CBT, theory, bought a 125 and rode it for a few months, took a week of lessons, mod 1, one more days lesson, mod 2 and.... full licence.

If I had the time again I'd do CBT then go straight on to do the rest and not bother with a 125. I had some good fun on it but really, I just ended up with a bunch of bad habits that the instructor had to get out of me before test time.
 
Went the full license/D.A.S. route when i was 20 at the time but after 2 years it turned into a full license. A bit impatient which leads onto....
I spent my 21st (literally on my birthday!) in Crown Court getting banned for speeding anyway lol.

That's another big thing as well that I forgot to mention. Some of the things I've seen mates who are only riding on CBT do is scary.

That said, some of the things I've seen mates with full licences do is scary as well, but at least they don't have to now try and pass a test!
 
I was planning to do what you were going to do with getting a 125 for a few months but now I am just going to do what Ghosteh did and just go straight to DAS, I dont really see any reason for getting the 125 as I know a few people who also just went straight from CBT to DAS with no problem too.
 
I got a 125 so that I could get comfortable on that before moving on. I'm not great under pressure so I wanted to take some of that pressure away by getting to the point where I was totally at ease riding the 125. I think that this approach worked for me but different things work for different people.

If you're happy going straight on to DAS then go for it. I would do your CBT first and see if riding comes naturally or if it needs some work (I was in the latter category).
 
My route was wait till I was 41 years old, then take cbt then das with no previous experience of bikes...however I had been driving since 17 yrs old.
My training was a bit cocked up tbh, booked the whole shebang with a one man show, think it was about £600 total but payable on a pay as you go basis. Didnt start well as he turned up with the wrong bike on day one, so had to go back to his storage facility to fetch correct bike, failed mod 1 first time out...then had clutch cable snap as I pulled away for the swerve manoeuvre on my 2nd mod 1 ....then my instructor decided to incorporate my training with a guy who was going to test centre for his mod 2, it was about 20 miles away....nice ride for me....however the guy going for his test had the bike break down and it had to be that bike he took the test on...guy missed his test. (At least now I know why it was called budget bike training......)
Anyway finally passed mod 1 with him but happened to mention that his idea of sticking black tape on the speedo in the 30-40 zone (for the speed trap part of test ) was maybe a bit wide and would be better in white too.......never heard from him again .... ******.

Decided to finish mod 2 with a place I have passed on my way to work for last 20yrs.....did a couple of 2hr rides over a couple of weeks...then failed mod2 for going wide round couple of corners mainly....couple more lessons then passed next attempt.
Cost a bit more than the £600 I would have forked out to the original joker in the end....but hey ho I got there in the end.
In all honesty if funds allow I think the das route is better cost it saves having to go through further tests later on in life.
 
Mid 20's, CBT>Theory>DAS and a 500cc bike for a year or so at which point I got a 650 and then did IAM.
 
I think an intensive DAS is a safer way to get a licence than passing a CBT and then being allowed to ride a 125 for 2 years even without taking a theory test. There's enough in that course, including the MOD1 & MOD2, to weed out people who are not good enough.

Personally I spent a lot of the 80s and early 90s riding bikes but gave them up and returned to them last year. Massively regret those 20 years off bikes.

Agreed, I see too many idiots on L plates.
 
In my area das course go for at least 650gbp - 700gbp which includes about 12 hrs on bike training,cbt,mod1 fee,mod2 fee,theory fee) is this reasonable or a total rip off compared with how much you paid at your time of training ?

Whats harder to pass the maneuvers in mod1 or the on road driving test mod2 ?
 
Bought a 125 13 months ago & did my CBT, Enjoyed my 1T through the summer & autumn so much I bought an old NSR for the winter, Had the NSR around 6 weeks & some blind **** pulled out on me sending me over the bonnet & across the road.
Sold the NSR a few weeks after the accident & sold my Chopper a couple of weeks ago after having 15 days out on it this year already.
Did my Theory/Hazard perception last Friday & scraped a pass & have my first lesson Tuesday 1st.

Looking back the year on the 1T's did me some good but if I was to do it again I'd just have done my CBT & moved straight on to do my DAS. There is no point wasting a year on a 1T & the instructors I've met are well good enough to prepare you properly for owning/riding a big bike.
Correct path I think is to book & do your CBT then if you like it just book your DAS, At least this way you get a good taster so if you don't like it there's no money lost.
 
CBT, Theory, CBF125 for 2 months, Mod1, Mod2 (33bhp for 2yrs), CBF125 part ex'd for ER-6f.

Currently enjoying a full license and a 2006 Speed Triple :)

That sounds fairly decent to be honest.....like I said earlier, mine was about £600 all in, or thereabouts but that was almost two yrs ago. My local Street bike, IIRC
wanted a cool £1000 !

As to your question as to what's easier, well that's down to the individual tbh, although my feeling is that the mod1 is harder cos once yr on the road with yr mod2, as long as you feel comfortable with your general riding, everything should go to plan.
 
tbh I think I wouldnt have passed if I did my CBT the day before my training, I did over a year on an NSR an then did theory, another couple of months then did my training and full test (a day before MOD 1 an 2 can into effect) an I passed with 3 minors.

the extra time getting used to a bike was great, but the 500, being a hell of a lot heavyer than my 125 was a lot harder to control.
