Hey guys,

Just built a website for a company, which i was asked to do and never really thought about how much it would cost them.

The website consists of 18 pages. Languages used are html, CSS and Java script.

The company was formed from a bunch of employees made redundant from their last company and besically took their department to form a new company. They did not have much content to add to the site apart from some documents for download and some case studies.

I have had to write and research all the work they do to inform and market it on their website which has been quite time consuming.

I also have had to write several documents for them and create a logo.

They have asked me for a price now i have finished and they seem very pleased so how much should i say?

how do i charge them as well? by page? hours?

I would charge them per hour for the pages, especially as more language was used and then a fixed fee for the documents.

You should have agreed some sort of idea on costs before you designed it tbh.

Yeah, work out how many hours you have spent on the project. Then work out how much you think you should get. I'd say about £25 an hour would be reasonable, but then it depends on what they will pay, bit late now as the job is done! Worth putting in a price too high and negotiating down.

well they didn't seem too bothered about cost when they came to me, i originally said that someone i knew charged £60 a page and he had a list of additional features which could be done at cost.

18 pages at £60 is £1080

i did a contact form for them which i think was an additional feature at a cost

i have made about 5 documents which i was thinking £10 - £20 each

overall i would think about charging £1250?

For 18 static pages, plus the extra things you did that seems slightly on the cheap side. It's also good if you work out how much per hour your essentially being paid for the site. Did you use any server languages like php, asp?

As a comparision, have just done a 7 page site in html/css (client wanted it to perfectly validate to the strict doctype, even though they had no idea what it was ), with a asp page that displays latest news/news categories. They also have a little admin thing to manage news. All that took around a week on and off and cost them £1500.

I think that's slightly on the harsh side, but perhaps judging from your location that is fair. I'd negotiate a bit then say you'll take 5% less in return for an absolutely glowing reference, that might well give you the upper hand on getting your next project :)

seems about right in my mind.

Well i am not sure how many hours i have done but it seems a lot, its all been in my spare time. They have no demand for it straight away as they are still setting up and all they needed from me asap were documents.

I think £1250 is reasonable, if they seem a little unhappy ill drop it a little. The thing i see from my eyes is that i am building their company image here and i saw it to be quite some work for one person.

Yeah a reference will be nice, i think that they would be happy to do that anyway. I have a link at the bottom of the page to my email address anyway as i don't have any website as of yet.

any chance we can see the site? trouble is a lot of people say what they'd pay and assume that you're the same level, but could actually just be some kid who only just learning still and isn't worth more then a few hundred.

out of interest how much would people say the owner should have paid for the following site? (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=the+tile+market&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=, first result) type /old after the domain name to see the older site

Sorry its not hosted yet, they are down to hand over the hosting to me friday so ill post it up then for you guys to see :)

WRT Mammalian I think that is a decent attempt, but not professional enough to deserve £1k as is being discussed here.
of course i was not suggesting that it was worth £1k (although i say it is worht more but then i know the work gone into it), but why is the op's site, which hasn't been seen yet, and from what i have read was less work, worth £1,250, maybe more? i am not saying the site will be bad but atm we haven't seen it and people are suggesting prices when the site could end up being something like this
