binge drinking

Short term, put curfews in place for increasing periods of time in town centres where there is a significant drinking problem. That means say, all pubs, clubs and restaurants shut at 9:30pm, no-one allowed on the streets after 10pm.

Do you ever go out?
What about the likes of myself who enjoys going out pretty much every friday, saturday and sunday night and who never actually leaves the house until after 10pm, having a few drinks in the house beforehand.
If you actually went out you'd realise how silly your idea would be.
That's like somebody with a 1.2 clio campaigning to ban all 3+ litre engined cars from the roads because big cars pollute the environment more.

Just for the record I drink in two towns/cities that have highly publicised drink-related problems occurring at weekends. That maybe affects 0.005% of people but the rest of us still go out to have a good time.

Sorry, not having a go at you.

Banning under 21's - no. The notion of getting to legal drinking age just gets hyped more and more.
Making drink more expensive - probably not a bad idea, because it's too cheap & accessible at the minute.
Enforcing the under-18 regulations - won't be done because it's still too easy for them to get a hold of, one way or another.

I think the only effective way is through education and your general upbringing but that's never going to change the world either. For whatever reason I have been drinking in my mum & dad's company since the age of 14 or 15 and have never thought of drink as a big taboo/mystery or a real big achievement to get a hold of. Nowadays I drink more, and more frequently than, any of my friends at present; but at university and the likes, unlike the same bunch of people I didn't really see the enjoyment in "getting a 10-glass and getting ****ed" approach, it's always been a social thing for me instead. But you can't just plant that idea in people overnight.

In summary - the world's probably going to end.

Ban under 21's? What? That whole video is between atleast 30yr old men and above.

Exactly. Like how people get all high and mighty when they get older thinking they are above younger people.

Plus pretty sure we had this convo about banning under 21s on these forums not so long ago.

Make drink more expensive, so people can't get ****** on a tenner.

It doesnt require putting up it just requires better punishment. The normal hard working class man shouldn't have to suffer because of idiots. I dont drink that much out anymore, so why punish my drinking at home because of it.

Price isn't the answer, I have less disposable income than when I was in my 20's. Morgage is higher, utilities are thought the roof and rising, why up the price just because of a few idiots.

That wont stop the government using it as an excuse to tax the arse out of the normal man using the excuse they are saving us all. Hiding the fact they can't punish these ***** hard enough.

no law will change the way people behave - I don't understand it as alcohol has always been a social tool, sometimes I over use it but meh - life happens.

What I don't understand is people who drink sherry or vodka before a night out to get 'tanked up', I eat suitable meals at a suitable time to reduce how ****** I get (and how much I can drink while out).

Even more worrying to me is how people become so violent when smashed - what is that about? Are most people just violent animals with a thin veneer of civilisation or does drink just effect people differently?

It isn't just a few idiots though, otherwise there wouldn't be a problem as such. I would prefer harsher punishment, but I doubt it will happen.

It affects everyone different from what i've seen. When i've had a drink I seem to just chill out, go with the flow and have more confidence. Whereas my friend always has broken knuckles after a night out.:o

i fear you are most probably right in that assumption.

Price wont make a difference, it didnt make a difference to smokers. Is beer any cheaper in the wage packet than in the 70's.

There has been a degeneration in society of whats acceptable and whats not in all aspects of our life.

Perhaps instead of taxing those of us that drink without being an arse they should license child birth to stop these ****s being born to people who can't bring the children up properly.

So I end up paying because some **** can't teach their kids the acceptable way to behave.

The statement I always hear that winds me up "I'm going out to get ****ed tonight"

So clever, why not go out have a few drinks and if it happens it happens, but to go out with the sole purpose of power drinking. Idiots.

Its not down to the cheapness at all. I had access to strong drinks (namely cider) from a young age, and did throw up my guts - my own fault. Its entirely down to upbringings and also the circles people keep themselves in.

pfft asda lager. The trick for the neds is 1/2 bottle of vodka (4.99 or cheaper) plus 1 litre bottle of red bull equivalent. Drink or most likely pour out the amount required to get the full 1/2 bottle of vodka in. That and buckfast...

I couldnt agree more, im not been smart but I started going out in town drinking with friends from mid teens, and if im honest I probably saw more bother then than i do now (not that I go out as much now) that was around 17 years ago then again i probably go to different places now, of course you see the odd bit of bother but....

The question is........... are things getting worse? or are they just been reported more? whatever it is, its totally uncalled for but i think Liverpool Lad is right, it has a lot to do with up bringing and the people you mix with
