So I bought my current mobo and chip back in 2013. I knew at the time that I had an option in the future to go for a 4930k as an upgrade, so I could get more time out of my mobo.

My 3820 is doing fine to be honest so no real need to upgrade. Although perhaps when I go and get a 4k screen and another 980ti to drive it I might see some bottleneck..I don't really know.

But I've come across these bad boys https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-001-8P&groupid=595&catid=3079

What do people think?

Get the chip test it hard for 7days straight and then be happy?

I wonder if 8pack has his results for each chip? Be good to know the results for each chip as its sold....

I wonder what the returns policy is?

It seems that you only get a 90 day warranty with them. That puts me off straight away. Also: Can you use LN2 in an everyday system?

For the same price you could buy a X99 CPU and motherboard. That's what I'd be doing, if I had the need for 6 cores.

Just buy a 4930k if you must have a new chip. My 3930k runs perfect with anything I can throw at it... Photo editing and gaming wise :)

Also I wouldn't buy anything Ian has thrashed to death and/or put his name to. Certainly wouldn't be paying a premium for it!

I bought the binned 4770k and 3770k. The 4770k is great and does 4.9ghz on 1.3v or around 6ghz on 1.7v under ln2, and the 3770k doesn't work properly, but its getting rma'ed this week. The warrenty is 90 days, if a CPU is going to die or go wrong its going to be in the first week or so 95% of the time. 3 year warranty is almost pointless, as a chip on proper motherboard, with the right cooling should last 5 years easy.

That's because you don't understand, Ian is not a multiple World champion by mistake or luck, he's worked 1000's of hours.

And the hardware your using probably was developed using Ian's immense skills

I can tell you that when he tests those CPU's he runs them within the Intel specs and some motherboards on Auto settings actually put more voltage into them than Ian would ever do.

When you look at the systems that he builds and sell for £10,000 on Overclockers do you see any comments about them failing or being unreliable.

I really shouldn't have to say this, the information is there for you to look at

You're out of your mind... You think his 5960x won't have exceeded 1.3v-the recommended voltage limit...

These things are hammered, I've bought hardware off him... I Know!

What happened to the ones that failed the binning process?
Just went into standard OCUK OEM sales? or sold off as "B-Class" stock?

It's not like they would give him 50 chips and he's selected the top 5 of them and they chucked the other 45 is it?

No need to say any more then if you know, I'll let you think what you want Ian won't give a dam and really neither should I, I wish I had never responded.

I think Gibbo cleared this up a while ago, IIRC the OCUK systems aren't the crappy chips Ian didn't want. He buys his own and bins them into tiers based on the OC he applies to his own 8Pack branded systems... I may be wrong though.

With all the experience you have I'd expect you to have multiple recoreds.

I have 17 World hardware and 34 others in the top 5 of the World so yes I must be out of my mind.

So you're telling me you never exceed the recommended voltages to get these chips running at 6+GHz lol?
And you're also telling me they don't degrade from being run and benched at these levels lol?

If he in effect buys his own and bins them then fair play to him.
Makes more sense too...

Yeah there was a bit of a stink ages ago, people thought if they bought a chip through OCUK they'd be getting one that Ian had already mashed that hadn't made the cut. This isn't the case though so any chip you buy from them could well be a really good clocker.

There's no doubt Ian is the best overclocker in the world. I don't see anyone here suggesting otherwise.

That said, it's perfectly natural that not everyone will want to buy a old, dated CPU that's only has 90 day warranty. If the CPU has had crazy voltages run through it during the speed binning, it may have impacted it's lifespan.

I always buy retail CPU's. If they don't have Intel's factory seal upon arrival, they go straight back.

I'd never trust any retailer enough to buy an OEM chip - literally no way to tell if it's been speed binned or not, since there is no seal on them and any thermal compound can easily be removed.

poor you. i have well over 50 cpus that are second hand, some missing cap on the back, some with bent pins, nearly all of them work. and i've probably saved ££££'s.
