Is there any Bionic client that makes proper use of the 7970's performance?

Currently it's sitting idle while I f@h smp, just wondering if another client has a good core that can utilize it fully. It's garbage for F@H currently.

Seti@Home also works pretty esp as its able to crunch through the AP and VLAR WUs with ease compared to the NVidia cards. But yes MW is its forte really.

downloaded bionic and using milkyway, is there a way to just use the GPU for milkyway, as I don't want it using the cpu threads reserved for my F@H smp? I put use GPU always in the options but my cpu usage is flashing 100% randomly and 0% gpu usage at the mo.

Go to the MW homepage/your account/MilkyWay@Home preferences, and edit it to ATi GPU only.

BOINC doesn't have ppd as such it uses rac (recent average credit) which is a sort of decaying average. For example my 7970 does 420k ish on a good day but the rac is currently only 372k due to various factors eg project server downtime, power cut and internet outage at my end and sometimes it just gets wus that give less points.

Oh and to get the best output for MW you want to push your core clock as high as possible, you can drop the memory clock as low as it will go (think it is 1250 on the 7970). Then you want to run two WUs at a time and offset them by suspending one when the other is at 50%. This should keep your GPU at 100% all the time rather than having a 3-4 second gap between WUs while the GPU is waiting for the CPU. When a WU only lasts about 35-36s on the 7970, this is quite significant (about 10% increase in output).

How do I turn the cpu crunching off? I selected only ati gpu in the website pref but it's still 100% my resources.

Nevermind, seems only the GpU is crunching now, using 1-3% cpu and 99% GPU, is that ok? As I want to use my cpu for F@H smp

Sounds ok, there is always going to be a bit of CPU usage at the start and end of each WU. For best performance I leave one core free for the GPU since I don't get much points off the CPU anyway, but that is probably not of interest to you.

Anyway, welcome to Milkway. It is nice to have you on board :D We are not far off the world number 2 spot for RAC so every little helps :)

All going well. still getting my 17k ppd on F@H and got GPU maxed out for milkyway.

Problem I'm having now is when I've got Bionic running my internet goes from 4-5mb/s to 0.2mb/s and the dns errors on chrome/wireless cuts off.

I turn bionic off and network goes back to normal.

Any suggestions?

Seems to me ok now. It was definitely casuing problems yesterday and today it's fine when running :)

Do the points awarded in milkway correspond to points awarded in folding@home? Seem abnormally high. I got 100k in a few hours and it takes about a month of folding to reach that.

Also since this is the first time having my new gpu 100% for a hours, my pc case has got very hot. GPU is averaging 74c and the front of my case, under the dvd drive is burning hot for some reason. also my cpu temps have gone from 55c to 62c, I image because the ambient temps inside the case have gotten higher. Is this normal?

Using a CM storm scout and it has 1 exhust fan blowing out and one blowing in. In a cramped area beside my bed, so not much cool air flowing in :D

No, F@H does not use BOINC so the points system is different. In theory all BOINC projects should give the same points for the same amount of work but it does actually vary quite a bit. Milkyway gives the most points for AMD/ATI cards.

RAC on milkyway for a 7970 should be around 300+K its around 35-40 sec per unit depending on how many you do at once and what your overclock is, you get 160 points per WU no matter how fast you do them.

A 5870 takes around 20 seconds longer so RAC is around 200K, same caveats apply.

To get that sort of PPD on Folding@Home you need a quad dodecca core MagnyCours rig, then you will get around 400K to 600K depending how fast the cpus are.

And yes its gonna get hot in there, and as the ambient temperatures keep rising so will the rig temps unless you can cool the ambients down or exhaust the hot air from the rig somewhere. Welcome to the world of Distributed computing, great in winter, but a PITA in summer!

Water cooling only helps so much, you still have to get rid of the heat somewhere and unless you can keep the ambients down even the best watercooled rig will just keep getting hotter and hotter.
