I having realy difficulties with my PC and I hope you can help me.

The machine is a little old and storage is getting a little tight so I decided that a new hard drive was in order, simple job I thought how wrong I was.

When I connect the second SATA drive and boot up I get the following message:

hardware initiate failed press g to cont
BIOS does not initiate or something like that

When you go into the BIOS with the second drive attached now HDD is recognised or at least the details aren't displayed as they normally are for the single drive.

The machine specs are (please don't laugh):
AMD Athlon 64 3500
ASUS A8V Deluxe rev 1.00 - BIOS 1017.002 (14-Nov-2005)
2Gb DDR memory
Western Digitial SATA 200Gb
480w PSU
2 DVD burners - cannot remember the makes
1 FDD

The new drive I am trying to get the BIOS to recognise is:
Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB SATA-II (HD501LJ)

I have the Promise SATA raid controller turned off and have checked all the leads, in fact I have switched them between the drives.

When the second drive is unplugged from the motherboard the machine boots up fine and goes into XP without fuss.

I have googled and the suggestions ranged from using the latest BIOS, which I have got (excluding the revision 1018.002 BETA) and replacing the leads which I have done.

On the SAMSUNG drive there are no jumpers so it looks like ::
On the WD drive there is one jumper looking like :::|
I have looked on the Samsung and they helpfully show for jumper configurations not two.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on and how I can resolve this.
