Hi, could somebody tell me where to find the updated version of this BIOS?

GBT - 42302e31 Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

I've looked on gigabyte's site and they have different BIOS versions, but according to my bios version the developers of my bios are award software international. I can't find their website though...

My motherboard is a: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R

I'm not sure what revision my bios is, if that's even relevant, but if I need to download the bios update from Gigabyte then I think it is...

Basically, I haven't got a clue and I kinda need some help on this, I need to update it because of a malfunctioning graphics card which I'm being helped with in that section...

Okay, I found what revision it was by looking inside the case, it's 1.6. Okay, so those are the right updates then, I got really confused because of the award software international thing.

Anyway, cheers for those links :)

One last thing:

My system is crashing randomly at the moment. Sometimes (like now) it can be on for over an hour and not crash. Sometimes it'll crash within minutes of logging on.

If the system crashes whilst I'm updating the BIOS I could get really ****ed, however my system does not crash when in safe mode.

Is it okay to update the BIOS in safemode rather than in windows normal?

You need to be more clear about what you mean by crashing.

Do you mean freezing, or random shutdowns / reboots?

If it doesnt occur in safe mode then it must be a program you have running in the background normally that is causing a problem.

First things first, right click on 'my computer' and click 'manage',
go to the event viewer and look through the system and application logs for anything marked error with a timestamp around that of your most recent crash. Read the logs and see if they give you a clue or post anything here that you are not sure about.

If that doesn't work:
If on windows XP go to start->run, type 'msconfig'
if on vista / 7 type 'msconfig' in the universal search box in the start menu
go to the startup tab. Untick anything that is non essential and reboot your computer. See if the problem goes away. Then if it does, retick various things and reboot each time until the problem comes back. Then you will know which program is causing the problem.

Safe mode is quite restrictive about what it lets you do. It may well not let you run the bios update utility.

It's an unstable graphics card that's causing the crashes, it doesn't happen in safemode because in safemode the graphics card isn't utilised(?). My display shuts off, sometimes seemingly random, sometimes when I do something like load a game. It won't always crash, just sometimes. Sometimes when it shuts off it will come up with lines of colours, and sometimes it'll just go black. Windows is still usually running behind it, although windows often freezes aswell when it goes blank (I know this due to system sounds i.e. music etc... that I can still hear), but is almost always still running when the lines come up.

The g card is new, I put it in only a few days ago, I made a topic in the g card section concerning the actual graphics card: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18342119

Safe mode still loads the graphics drivers as far as I know. And it must be utilised to an extent otherwise you wouldnt have anything on screen. Those symptoms are almost certainly the card though. Although its not certain if it is drivers or hardware. I will have a look at the thread. Hope you get it sorted

Thanks :)

As I said, the card is new, I used an anti static wristband to put it in and was very careful, if it is damaged it was either damaged when I got it or the damage was unavoidable.

I can run games a lot of the time though. I ran skyrim with no crash after at least an hour earlier. Yet other times my computer crashes before the game ever loads. Also, the card can run the MSI kombustor benchmark test without any problems (although it's died every time i've tried running the heaven one), so surely if it was a hardware problem I could never run games, the fact that sometimes I can't, and sometimes I can would suggest it's a software problem?

Safemode might not run graphics drivers, I have no idea how it works, but when you have no graphics drivers installed you can still get onto a 800x600 res windows to install them, I assumed safe-mode ran the same way?

Windows has graphics drivers with limited compatibility built in, so that's why you can get a display without the proper drivers for your card installed. I will confirm it but I would have thought that safe mode would use the drivers for your card if they are available. Safe mode loads only essential windows drivers and software though so perhaps not.

A hardware fault doesn't necessarily have to occur consistently but at this point I would agree with you that it is far more likely to be a software fault.

Also just as food for thought, I have an interesting graphics bug I started a thread about that is vsync related. But I am pretty sure that is a motherboard / chipset issue as opposed to a graphics card / drivers issue. Basically I am saying that there is a small chance it may be something else altogether that is causing your problem. Have you checked all your drivers are up to date?

Which drivers could potentially be causing a problem do you think? I know my graphics card driver is up to date, but a lot of my drivers probably arn't...

Also, would using the 'optimised defaults' option in BIOS be the best way of removing the overclock on my system prior to updating the BIOS?

Yes resetting your BIOS to defaults will be the best way of removing your overclock.

its hard to say but I would start with the chipset drivers and go from there. It never hurts to keep everything up to date anyway.

Have you looked in the windows event viewer by the way?

I have checked the event logger, I get this error before every crash and at other times aswell. I'm not sure how long before the crashes exactly, generally a minute or two before I get the next error saying the system shut down unexpectedly:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

source: WMI
Event ID: 10

That error has previously been associated with graphics drivers so the two could well be related. Have you tried rolling back to an older driver version? Also I would still recommend trying the msconfig approach I suggested earlier, As your issues could well be caused by something another service is trying to do coincidentally.
