Is GFWL similar to Steam? If I buy it now (am using my work laptop), will I be able to go home to my desktop and download the GFWL client and game and play it? Or is GFWL more of a "download it when you buy it" affair?

Yes thats correct.

You can buy now then download whenever via the GFWL client on any PC/Laptop it makes no difference as long as your using the same gamertag.

Maxes out bandwidth as well being MS they naturally have a lot to spare Once you install any game bought from GFWL as well you do not even need to have the client open ever!

You can buy any game on GFWL with MS Points which is handy as i like you bought some games cheap from there with leftover points
