Just seen the news that Bioware is closing down.... The studio that created some epic RPG style games (Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Knight of the Old Republic)

Can't say I am surprised given its most recent takeover by some Saudi private investment fund that then laden it with $20bn in debt.

Sad news. I loved their games.

Really sad news (edit: at least the memory of the original dev team). I still remember installing Baldur’s Gate with the ridiculous number of discs on my first PC. :(

I never got into Dragon Age, but loved Mass Effect and KotOR too :(

BioWare were for a long time my favourite developers by a long margin, unfortunately as often happens they began to nose dive when EA got their hands on them.

They've not released a legitimately good game since Mass Effect 2 in my opinion, I realise many liked 3 but it simply didn't do it for me compared to the prior games. Too much third person shooter, not enough RPG for my liking, alongside some very dodgy/poor development choices.

Dragon Age had huge potential as a franchise, shame it was never fully realised. I'm probably one of the few people that actually liked (parts) of the second, but largely disliked Inquisition, it felt like an empty MMO to me. The less said about the absolute travesty that was Veilguard the better, absolutely shocking train wreck of a game and clearly the final nail in the coffin for the studio.

Lets not forget the fantastic KOTOR, NWN, and extremely underrated Jade Empire.

I can't say I'm that sad on this one? It's an iconic name, but the real talent had left long ago and they've had nothing but average to bad games for the last 10 years with that name carrying them. Anthem was hilariously poor when I played the beta, I'm surprised they didn't sink then when all that debacle behind the scenes came out.

Yeah, you and others are right. Would have been interested to see the Mass Effect game they had going on. But then again, Andromeda was pretty damn bad.

I thought Casey Hudson was back doing Mass Effect 5. RIP Mass Effect, you gave me the best times with ME3 multiplayer most of all.

Yup thank’s for some of my favourite gaming memories.

BG, Mass effect, KOTR and one of my all time favourites NWN.

Haven’t been good in years tho!!

I think Bioware have fallen foul of what most western developers have over the last 10-15 years. Lack of Leadership and Artistic Direction. Anthem and Dread Wolf being clear examples of development hell due to lack of clear direction / game ideas and were chopped and changed.

As others have said what made Bioware great changed as people left, people changed, budgets and Teams ballooned and idealogy encroached.

Its sad to see them close but the torch can hopefully carry on with teams like Larian.

Well who's next.

The EA shareholders sold out for 50 billion and now EA continues as privately owned and having to pay 1.8 billion a year just in interest.

Bound to be more getting launched out the window in cartoon fashion as well as quadrupling down on any monetisation.

Some irony that the sharks came for EA.

Anthem...

Then there was Dragon Age Veilguard with a couple of members of this forum saying how good it was, and failing to listen to the actual player base that it was BAD. REAL BAD! ( I told you as much )

Poor decision after poor decision, failing to look towards what people wanted , Dragon Age Origins anyone? And this happens.

While Baldurs Gate 3 was given high praise from another developer and publisher, Bioware just went completely the wrong direction.

I feel for the people who lost their jobs, but the management was horrendous
