Bit cold yesterday!

Coldest I've ever seen was -5c, -10c is pure evil.

At what point does petrol freeze?

Petrol begins to freeze at -71C, although if there is water in your tank, the water can freeze and block fuel lines/pumps etc... But the petrol itself... very cold.

Diesel on the other hand starts to cloud at 0 degrees, and begins to gel at around -10 degrees. However the diesel you buy in winter is often a different blend with better low temperature performance. So unless you drive really infrequently it shouldnt be a problem.

Some diesel vehicles preheat the fuel to prevent gelling.

might have to purchase one, I like gadgets!

At least you guys can get into your cars to see how cold they are.

Mine is still covered in a layer of ice, can't open the doors. Don't need to tho, my brother binned it over the weekend, radiator is an interesting shape.

What do you drive? and what happened?

This is one thing I disliked about having had oil temperature & transmission temperature gauges in these kind of weathers. Getting in the car in the morning and seeing your oil temperature listed as '-3' always made me thing "nooo, don't want to start it" :p

Do you not drive a cupra?

Thats crap mate

-6 last night again!

Freezing! :(

I did 200 miles on Thursday night on my bike, when I got to Norfolk it was -3 and my jacket was frozen :/

Bit stupid tbh

This was a after a drive a couple of weeks ago.

Wipers aren't much use in freezing rain when they look like this:

After 6 hours of driving there was an inch of ice over the front of the car, look at the headlights! Explains why I couldn't see much...

Then you get up the next morning and have to get into the car :D

This weather is horrible, we've had to start putting my mum's Golf in the garage now, the ice on it in the morning is terrble.

Mines the only car in the car park that gets really badly iced up, what can cause it to be so much worse then everyone elses?

Sorry if this is a noob question, but what are the factors that cause a car to not start first time in the morning?

This is my first winter with the Peugeot 307cc I bought in June (94 reg), and the last week of cold weather has caused me to have to turn the key twice to get it started, on more than one occasion. My Focus hardly ever had such things happen.

When it does start, I can hear the engine labouring before a few seconds later getting into a steady rhythm. Sometimes the whole car vibrates if I leave it idling after a cold start, yet any revs take the vibration away - something my 306 used to do in the latter stages I remember! Purely a Peugeot thing?

I'm going to take it in for a look at the garage as it's still under warranty.

But I presume the cold weather affects the battery..what about the starter motor/sparkplugs etc. Should I have to put up with a car that won't start in the mornings when it's been frosty overnight?

Pfft, -10 is nothing you nancies! Try -40 in the states where (if you can get your car started) you can't even turn the engine off filling up as it will have frozen solid by the time you come out of the shop having paid for it!.

What do you drive? and what happened?

98 Punto.

And what happened is he was driving too fast.

Came round corner, slide across to the oncoming lane, hit stationary car (I think), he claims he wasn't driving too fast, yea right.
He probably had the front wheels locked up too, he's demonstrated before that he's perfectly capable of locking both and not even noticing, he thought the brakes had failed last time he did that, lol.

his 3rd crash (he's 19).

Unfortunately this time he hit a someone who wants to go down the insurance route (1st crash was going to go 50:50, each sorted own cars, 2nd he hit a wall). So that'll be back up to £1k in June when the policy needs renewing.

When I get to unwrap my S5 IS I'll get some photos (I'm going to register on fiatforum where he's a regular and drop him in it. :D ).

The car will likely be repaired, it came out a lot better than the Clio he hit (Although the Clio he hit seems to have accumulated damage since the incident).
