Bit of a mess.

Hi there.

Chatting to some mates last night, a couple are of to uni ones going in the RAF and the other is going to Australia for a year.

It seems I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I've just turned 20, I work as an IT Techy on 1st line and i'm not enjoying it at all.

Most of my qualifications are IT based but I want to experience life before I settle down in a career. People keep saying forces but i'm not sure what I can go in as.

I don't want to go to uni, as I won't work and it'll be a waste of money but IT is not what I expected. It just doesn't seem to "tax" me.

I sit on Facebook most of the time.

I love cars, have done since i've been little due to my father's side of the family being heavily involved with them. I'm not sure if there is any money in this side of things anymore though :(

Any advice??

If you don't have any commitments then you can do whatever you want. The IT sector is extremely varied so don't write it off because of your current job.

It depends what you're looking to get from work/career. I was considering the forces at one point but decided it wasn't for me - I know have a successful career in IT.

I'd recommend that you explore each of the paths in more detail. Pop down to an army recruitment center, look into some college courses in areas that interest you and speak to people who currently do those jobs.

look into them more see which one take your fancy then get along to a recruitment office and have a chat with the guys about it all. you can enquire about your eyesight while you are there. i doubt it will be a problem, probably depends what area you go into.
 
The problem is, I like car's etc but people in the business keep saying it's getting harder to make money in servicing etc due to bespoke parts only being available to main dealers.

I'd love to be a road cop but don't you have to be a standard cop for 2 years first?

you have to a normal beat cop for so many years before you can specialise.

a friend of mine joined the army and became a mechanic for the army, he gets paid a mint now and gets to fix things much more exciting than cars.

You have loads to do, learn to program, practise setting up domains/server/exchange. Take MS Certified exams whenever you have the spare cash. It'll all pay off.

Don't sit there and feel sorry for yourself, either quit and do something completely different or be proactive in getting yourself a more interesting job.
 
As said earlier, if you don't have commitments, you can bum around for as long as you like really: if you want some sort of career, you should seriously start thinking about getting stuck into something as time flies! and in ten years time, you'll find everyone employing young, bright applicants and not some thirty-something layabout.

You could always do what most people do and wait for the lottery win . . .

Going travelling is a very good idea, haven't done it myself but lots of my friends say that they had amazing times.
If you like cars and the like the forces could be a good option as you could be a mechanic of sorts.
 
Do properly consider the armed forces, it can make for an extremely rewarding career.

You need to read more stuff. Google for a while.
