ok, here goes, I have a conroe 6400 cpu (1066 fsb )
and a 6800 etreme (512) that is "i think without looking a the box" 1024 clock

so do i need to get ddr2 8500 to stop the memory slowing down the system? or would 6400s be just as good.

or would the difference even be noticable?

I am currently using an asrock dual-vsta with ddr1 in it, so I will be looking to replace the motherboard as well (I beleive the Asrock will take ddr2 6400 but not 8500 which is why I am asking - getting 6400s woudl mean holding off on having to shell out for a new MB for a short while)

thanks

just been doing some searching and discovered that the asrock only supports 533 / 667

So if i am reading this correctly (and i probably arnt lol)

533 (dual chanel ) will run at the corect speed for my 6400 at stock (which it is now) (which is 266 fsb x 4? )

667 would give me a little bit of overclocking space but the asrock doesent really have any overclocking capabilities though

I woudl need to clock the cpu up to 338fsb (*4 to get the 1334 of the 667 dual chanel)

and uping the cpu fsb to 338 would give roughly 2.7gig mhz (compared to the 2.1 now)

have i grasped it sort of right?

would the 667 memmory running at stock cpu drop its self down to 533 equivilent correctly or would i start getting some kind of sync problems.

I understand that this motherboard has been known to clock upto 300fsb but not past there, so if I did that, the cpu woudl be running at 300 x 4 (1200fsb and roughly 2.4 gig )

and the 667 memmory would keep up with that with out clocking or anything?

think i might just get the 533 and forget stay away from vlockign it lol

i am sure you can tell i dont have a clue RE fsb and oCing etc

You may as well stick with the ddr memory as long as you run the 4coredual/vsta, ddr2 will not allow you to clock as high as ddr on that board sadly. Best I get with ddr2 is 290fsb, previously got 300fsb with ddr.
