Hi again guys

I have my Q6600 running at 3.0ghz with a huge Venom cooler. Temps are awesome ie 33 idle and about 50ish under prime.

My memory is DDR2 4gb dual channel 800mhz, which is overclocked I think from memory to 833 I think to reach 3.0ghz on CPU. To get 3.6ghz out of the Q6600 my memory would have to be 1000. Is that safe or to much of a boost?

Also I have the hd5830 which I really like so far, I was thinking of overclocking this but only with the supplied ATi software, I think its called overdrive? Is this worth doing, also is it even worth me going from 3.0 to 3.6 on the Q6600?

I have seen on some forums once you get the Q6600 upto 3.0ghz anything above does not really boost much.

Also my Q6600 is at stock volts atm. It has never been overclocked before so has been running stock since new, apart from my 3.0 overclock the past 2-3 months. Or am I better off getting memory that is faster, I think my mobo will take faster ram.

Thanks for any advice.

remove the ATI overdrive thing and get MSI afterburner for the graphics card. it works for all makes and models of card, and its so much better.

as for the processor overclock i really couldnt help you :(

yeah as reaper said, MSI afterburner far outshines AMD's driver control. it also allows you too set the fans on a curve, not just a fixed value.
as for your q6600, load up coretemp and (when the cpu is under some load) check the value in the VID box, and write this down, tell us on here and people can guide you in how far your CPU is likely to go (mine (old CPU) was 1.3250v VID, and would hit 3.4ish stable).

as for the RAM limiting you, you should set the FSB:RAM ratio a bit lower, giving you more headroom, as if your ram is rated at 800, theres not much guarantee it'll do much more

Thanks for the help so far guys.

I rebooted and checked my bios just to double check my settings. This is for 3.0ghz

Cpu ratio is x9
Host Freq is 333
Memory Freq is 800 833

Soon as I raise the Host Freq to get more speed from the CPU the memory auto raises. At the moment its as said above 833 for the 3.0ghz. I dont want to fry my ram you see so unsure if going higher is safe.

I ran coretemp and checked the VID while running prime and that says 1.3250v (same as your old Q6600). 1.1625v idle I think I did at one point play with voltage and got it as low as possible and running stable.

I will check out MSI thanks for that. :)

Cheers

Is it not possible to run your memory 1:1.

so 9x400 = 3.6Ghz and you memory divider at 1:1 so you memory would run at the rated 800Mhz.
This is how I run my sons Q6600 at 3.6 with 800 ram

as mick said, you need to get your memory to 1:1 if you want to go near 3.6ghz. the setting you are looking for will be DDR-667MHz, at the current fsb of 333.

your next stop will be an FSB of 356, which is 3.2 GHz, which it should do at around 1.32-1.35v then 378 for 3.4, which will likely need above 1.4v with your VID

if you want to go for 3.6 then as Mick said, 400 fsb, but this will need around 1.55v, which is a lot! Also I could never get my CPU with the same VID stable at this speed

you also need to consider memory speed for gaming, so you may find that 3.2-3.3 with the memory at slightly over 800 is quicker, you need to experiment with that as it depends what games you play

you could also try dropping the multiplier to 8 and run the fsb at 400 for 3.2ghz 1:1 ram

mine did that at stock voltage

i have a similar setup.
but a good habit to get into is unlink the ram, so you keep it at stock speed as mentioned above. At least this way, you know its not the ram stopping your cpu overclocking higher.
i have a Q6600 B3 revision @ 3.4GHz 425x8 but i need 1.44v.
and my ram is 800mhz overclocked to 1020 MHz

there is always an option in the bios to adjust the ram speed.

also use msi afterburner for the card, just enable voltage control (if you can)
