Done almost 300 miles now with no drama :D

Brakes were initially shocking, but have come back to life nicely. I changed the front shocks on Wednesday evening, first side took 45 mins, second side 20!

Still got an annoyingly rough tickover which is a source of irritation, and the car feels jerky on the overrun. I'm off to the local porsche club meeting tomorrow (5 minutes drive from my house!) so hopefully someone will have encountered this before. I think it's something simple, though googling reveals at least a hundred "Annoyingly simple" causes!!

The clutch is also properly battered and i think will have to be replaced.

On the whole though she drives quite nicely. It's no rocket ship, but handles pleasantly and is easy to drive. Will only get better with a trackup, which will happen next saturday.

All tracked up - better.

The alternator packed up on tuesday, replacement obtained and fitted today.

Still trying to eliminate the slight misfire. I've found one more air leak in the main intake hose just after the MAF. This has improved things considerably. Other suspects are throttle position sensor and maybe an iffy valve. compression is good though.

The clutch is a worry and is going to sting a bit! The parts alone over the counter are over £500, but luckily i have a mate from the sailing club who will supply and fit for £550ish for £notes. It's not worth me spending a weekend on it to save so little.

love this picture, screams out "Driving, your doing it wrong!!" :D

awesome read, i love threads like this

I thought that, but it's only US cars that are affected apparantly. This would be due to differant software to cope with the emission regulations. Thanks for bringing it up though, and i am open to suggestions :)

Since changing that hose it's a lot better and what jerks there are i believe are down to the clutch. There is a rubber "donut" in the middle that wears out and causes the clutch to jerk on accelleration and decelleration. Since it's now equally bad on both rather than worse on the overrun i think it's new clutch time in the not too distant future. the noisy release bearing is also a cause for concern.

Latest update -

The drivetrain shunt is all but gone after some further surgery to the vacuum hoses, a differant MAF and throttle body. The pop from the exhause is also much better.

I think someone had tried to "tune" the misfire out by tweaking the mixture screws on the origional componants without first checking the obvious (IE are all the hoses actually connected!!). On removing the throttle body the O ring seal was found in the bowels of the engine where it performs no usefull purpose and was obviously contributing to rougue air in the system.

Also the airbox was slowly but surely filling up with oil. This did not seem good, though the engine certainly didn't sound or perform like it was knackered. A quick google revealed that the two O rings on the oil separator are prone to failure. Porsche wanted £20 each for these (1 inch nitrile seals), however i found a supplier who was much more reasonable at £4.87. The O ring seal was also missing off the oil filler car and a new one fitted.

It's now much, much better. There is still a very slight misfire at idle but it's nowhere near as bad as it was and there is no comparison at all with when i got it!

So I came to drive the car last week and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor - oh dear!

I obtained a new (used) slave cylinder last week and came to fit it today. Fairly straightforward you'd think, and changing the slave itself was pretty easy though bleeding it was a fiddle.

On reassembley the perrenial problem of the battery light was back with a vengeance. Normally it would come on after starting but go out and stay off after blipping the gas a little - not any more!

To cut a long and rather frustrating story short, it turns out there is a wire directly from the alternator to the starter that you can't see very easily unless you take the whole area apart. The connector on the wire was hanging by a thread, and removing the starter was the straw that broke the camel's back! New connector seems to have fixed the problem, though we'll see tomorrow what it's like from cold. Other than that all seems good for now!

While it was up on the ramp a poke around revealed that all of the steering rack bolts were loose, and one had fallen out! These have now been sorted, and the steering feels somewhat more positive!

Cor you were lucky!

Did you go round checking other 'essential' bolts after that? :D

Good thread, I have a soft spot for 944's as my old man owned a 944 Turbo S from new. Will have to dig out a picture.
Whats the final plans for this?

Yes, it was quite lucky the cylinder gave up because i would not have spotted that otherwise! The steering rack is about the only bit of the front assembly I hadn't done anything with up to now, everything else had either been off, adjusted or wasn't attached when I had the car.

Final plans - nothing special, it will just be a - hopefully - nice second car when it's all painted. It's too good to track convert, and I won't sell it unless i'm offered a very good price because it's exactly what I want from a classic car (Though the V8 in the old Stag across the way is a tempting sound!).

If it's painted in time it's going to the TIPEC national meeting at Hatton Park in May. There will be pictures of the repaint in progress when it starts :)

Great thread - cracking car too. Had some VW mad friends when I stayed down near Brum and one of your pics looks very similar to the units they used. Anywhere near Balsall Common?
