Bit of a question and a bit of a brag :S

What model are the 1U compared to the 2U // 3U servers?

I can't remember exactly, they're also similar spec however... All dual core, nothing fancy.

Small fans are louder than large fans, there is a reason why 120mm fans are popular in quiet PC's...

120mm fans work well in 3U high cases also... Whereas a 1U case will have 40mm fans...

Look at it this way:

120mm fans will always be 120mm fans

40mm fans will always be 40mm fans

Intel Xeon's wont always be Intel Xeon's at that time in the present.........

I must admit my PE 1850 is like a jet taking off, but at £30 all in, with one x Xeon dual core 2.8ghz, 2 gig ram, dvd drive, and 1 x 73 gig scsi drive I'm not too fussed. Once my network is sorted, and it's racked up under the stairs in a proper cupboard with thick walls I won't really care about the noise. I reckon it's about 200 watts useage. To offset this, I'm pretty good at making sure everything else is frugal, and I reckon that the extra speed etc. will get me the £150 a year costs back pretty quickly...
On t'ebay, extra 73 gig drive is about £20, £20 also for the RAID key, battery backup and 256 mb of read/write cache.£3 buys another cpu, with £10 for the heatsink. SSH into it, and Robert is your mother's brother!

Ok I got to admit I was wrong here, I've been looking for a cheap virtualisation server and didn't fancy the microserver, so I saw one of these for £150 with a single 2.33Ghz intel VT proc and 4GB RAM so I thought I'd give it a go.

They are excellent value for money, especially at the price you got yours mate! bargain!

Mine idles at about 180w, which considering I now no longer need to leave my desktop on as it has been part of my lab, there is not a huge amount of difference! but the ILO functionality is invaluable as I can now turn it off and VPN in from anywhere, power it up do what I want in my lab and power it down.

So I stand corrected in my shandy fuelled rubbish above! sorry guys

I also picked up a PAIR of 2.33Ghz Xeon 5140 processors for £15 (working) to fill the second socket and have a spair!

Just need a heatsink now

I'm running xenserver 5.6fp1

I also pulled out the SAS//SATA connector board so that I could slot in a standard 1TB SATA drive, works great!

The ILO functionality sounds pretty useful, my PC here runs my lab but I don't like to leave it running day in day out due to power consumption, and it's on a flaky wireless connection anyway so it would be pretty horrid anyway :P

We use ILO on the servers at work and sometimes it's a god send if a server goes offline, can reset it via the ILO :D
