Hi,

Can someone tell me if a new heatsink for a 478 type socket (P4 intel CPU) comes with the mounting bracket to attach onto the motherboard. Or do they just come with the heatsink and fan, and the mounting bracket is part of the mobo bits? Are there different types of mounting bracket compatible with certain mobos? or will any old P4 HSF do the job?

My mate has got a broken mounting bracket, I have no experience with P4's, so not sure whether a whole new HSF is required, just a mounting bracket, or both.

many thanks!

The heatsink will be supplied with a mounting bracket. AFAIK they are different on each HSF. You could try the MM to see if anyone has an old one, i'm sure most people on here will have had a 478 at some point.

The Retail cooling solution for an INTEL P4 is designed to attach to a standard P4 retention mechanism. The retention mechanism is part of a motherboard. Some 3rd party heatsinks include their own backplates.

If your mate has snapped the retention mechanism you can buy a replacement pretty cheap (or maybe beg one from the mobo manufacturer). If the clips on the heatsink are snapped then INTEL have been known to provide a replacement.

I remember the time I first fitted a standard P4 heatsink, the force you need to get that clip/lever turned is unreal! . . . and the Core 2 heatsinks weren't much better lol! :D

its the retention/mounting bracket that snapped. The HSF is ok. And its a bog standard Intel one (its got "+-AMP" written on it if that means ought to anyone). Looks very much like the one in your pic Wayne.

Cheers for the info, and good call about the MM. i'll check it out....
