Hey guys

I am doing up my old house, and need to get new carpets fitted, before the lettings co will take it on :( . I only have one day to get the carpets sorted, as the flat is quite far away from where I live - it has to be tmrw

The property is a small flat, and am not expecting much income at all from the flat - so I want to spend as little as possible on the carpets.

I want a dark colour, so that the tennants can't ruin it ! But apart from that, I'm flexible. I have no clue with thread count/pile etc etc - it's all gogeldygoop to me.

So does anyone have any advice as to what the cheapest type of carpet to go for is ? Where to get the cheapest carpet from ? And how much I should spend per sq metre / or sq yard.

Thanks

Mehul

U can pop into like world of carpets or something they do some really cheap. a lot of people to save money on places b4 renting em out they dont use underlay as that can be where the expense is!

we got some carpet for our computer room the other day think the rooms about 7ft by 13 or something, for plain cheapie dark blue carpet (with little swirls on) it was less than 50 quid an hour to lay it out and voila.

as long as the floor boards are in good nick you shouldn't NEED underlay or owt either

well not hugely important but it can keep the heating and stuff down and makes the carpet feel nicer imo u can soon tell the diff if u walk from a room with it to 1 without.

I think it can be expensive as well depends what u buy. In a flat id personally recommend it if it isnt too big as tennants will be very grateful. Plus it will probs help keep some of the noise down.

its a kind of insulation yeah, like veloc said it aint needed if floors in good condition but in my room i dont have any and in the landing i do. The landing feels a lot nicer to walk on then my floor lol

What exactly does underlay do? Just keep in heat and give more cushioning? If so then i want some!

basically, but it also covers those gaps you occasionally get between floorboards, mostly just for comfort / insulation though.

In our computer room we just layed wet plyboard then tacked it down so when it dried out it pulls taut and layed the carpet over that, wheelie chairs on soft underlay / carpet are a nightmare :D

FYI there is this foamy board stuff you can get (looks kinda like layers of green paper mashed up) quite cheap as underlays go, and apparently pretty good, saw some in B&Q a couple of weeks back. I'm not sure how much the foam rolls cost nowadays but they used to be quite expensive.

Veloc that green stuff your on about is normally used under wooden floors. Its thinner than a normal underlay and stops the floor for flexing and that.

the stuff I saw was kinda foamy though very bendy, it seemed quite dissimmilar to the stuff I've seen used under laminate floors it was about 1.5 centimeters thick too

proberly just a more expensive one. Manufacturers are always bringing out "New and improved" alternatives never usually a lot of difference.

Sure it wasnt underfloor stuff for underfloor heating? thats quite thick and very bendy its used for running pipework and stuff in bathrooms where u get nice warm tiles :D
