Wasnt 100% sure where to post this so if mods feel its in the wrong place feel free to relocate it :).

So came home a day or two ago and was greeted by my nephew (2 next month) - can I get an awwww :P , abit later I noticed he was trying to play with a usb dongle I had connected to the front my pc in the living room (its an RF dongle that came with my keysonic keyboard/trackerpad combo that I use all the time when watching movies/on the forums and am feeling too lazy to sit at a desk lol), anyways I took the dongle out and realised the little git had broken the usb connector from the board  sad times lol, anyways I decided today to try and fix it like I attempted last time (didnt work last time and just bought a new k/b with dongle) but I was more prepared this time - Do not rush being the key part.
I cracked out my (really cheaply bought soldering iron from...well cant say lol) and unsoldered the broken *feet* from the usb port (this being rather bloody tricky...as in really bloody tricky), then once I had this done I inserted a usb connector I bought (from same place as soldering iron, in about a multiple lol of 10) and tried it in my pc - pressing any button on my K/B would light up the led light on the usb dongle - looks promising so I decided it was worth the time to solder the usb connector in place - far easier than trying to unsolder and remove the broken pins may I add - and miraculously it works! - no in progress pictures as I wasnt really expecting anything to work - totally messed it up last time, did take 1 after it worked - if you really want to see some bad soldering lol. That is all really whup whup, not everyday you get to do some diy-fixer-upper (well dont know about you but I know I dont lol)

Thanks for reading this far and hope you enjoyed - feel free to reply of any diy jobs of your own :) (that most likely will involve a lot more skill that myself ;) lol)

The only DIY jobs I've completed that are interesting are failed ones :D

Opened a PSU for the first time to change the fan to a quieter one, got a shock from a capacitor...twice.

Used a hacksaw on a supporting beam in my case to get the PSU out without taking off the HSF. Metal shards all across the motherboard. Switched it back on. Dead motherboard.

Hot glued an old AGP graphics card into the slot because I broke the retaining clip. Yeah, that went well...

I have more. Happily this was in my early days of fixing computers. I've learnt since then.

Lmao - bet their were a few words said after you got the shocks from the psu capacitor :P

Those are some bold attempts (as as stated - interesting stories to boot) at DIY, bet the dead mobo was soul destroying though

I made myself a DIY Ambilight for around my TV. I pretend it's for the kids... if I ever have any :D

Went pretty well.

Soldering 18 gauge wire onto the LED strip without a fine tipped soldering iron was a pig though. I had to make a copper coil out of some of the unsheathed wire to wrap around the soldering irons tip and give me a smaller point.

Holy **** :O that looks epic, well done - I'd def. be showing that off to everyone I could get to come around lol

Haha, It is pretty cool. I think it cost about £150 to make roughly.

I need to do some cable tidying, going to group them all into the middle and put a dome shaped cover over them, painted the same as the wall, so you can't see any cables either.

Might see if I can get a white light switch as well what do you think?

Bit of cable management would be a nice added touch, add a bit if refinement, the dome idea seems like a good way to do it, and may as well. What have you got to lose.:-P

Been there done that....

Was tasked with seeing what was wrong with a potentially faulty psu in work so jumped straight in and opened her up............bzzzzzzz 'Jesus what was that, let me stick this screw driver in there again, it'll not happen again" bzzzzzzz......'sod that for a game of darts!' 'Aye it's goosed boss, we need a new one!!' :p

LMFAO - great story.Similar when changing batteries in UPS - saw another tech get a good little bolt off of one, was not too keen on sticking his fingers in there again in a hurry:D:D
