Bit off topic. Can't download with browser

I've got this issue in firefox and in IE.

I had firefox installed and IE turned off. Everytime I try to download a file, be it a picture or a exe the file doesn't go where I've set it to go and isn't on the machine anywhere. Therefore making me unable to download anything.

I uninstalled firefox thinking it was a firefox issue and turned on IE so I could download firefox again but I've got the same issue in IE. I have been downloading stuff last night and earlier this morning so I'm not sure why it's happening now.

so when you go into downloads on firefox and say "open containing folder" it just shows as blank ?

It won't let me click 'open containing folder' it's greyed out. And on IE it just does nothing. Even when I click Run rather than Save. It goes through the process of downloading the file but then once it's done the file just vanishes.

have you changed the folder where the downloads go to from the supplied one ?

I eventually managed to find a good restore point luckily. That would have been a full reinstall had I not. Looked online a lot of people have had the same problem with no fix yet found.
