How many seeders did you have on the torrent as this will affect the speed also are you connected to the net via a router if you are you will need to open your port to allow connections to come in.

Pipex cap P2P, you can (and infact should) correctly forward ports but that's not the issue. Sadly it's either find another method of obtaining the files you are downloading such as NG's, FTP etc. or consider moving to an ISP that doesn't have such a strict port throttling policy.

I'm on pipex 2mb & thought they was capping me, but i now get on good torrents my max 220kbps.
Use Azureus & goto Tools>>options>>Connections>>Transport Encryption
Tick "Require Transport Encryption"
Min encryption level "RC4"
Tick "Allow non-encrypted outgoing connections"
Untick "Allow non-encrypted incoming connections"
Tick "Use the 'cryptoport' tracker"

Works for me :)

You have to throttle you upload speeds too, if I set my upload anything higher than 20kb/s on 2MB cable I start to lose download speed.

Same problems here, on pipex and the port which is open is capped @ around 20Kb/s. I'm going to ring them up and have a general rant cause I'm not happy with the slow service I'm getting anyway and Im considering moving...

yeah ive moved into a flatshare and unfourtunately i moved from a lovely zen 8 meg connection to a shoddy intermittant pipex connection that is supposed to be 8 meg but never reaches anywhere near it.

anywho... as a bit of a benchmark have you tried downloading something very popular (and therefore very available) such as linux iso's? they're a very good way to test out your actual connectivity.

that and i just googled for utorrent tweaks and i got a list as long as my arm of things to do, they all seemed to have helped too - especially the stuff about maximum upload/download bandwidth, number of upload and download torrents, various other bits and pieces... oh and also the xp hack that increases the maximum number of open connections too.

hth.

You are not guaranteed to get 8meg. It is the Max speed possible. A number of factors contribute to your speed including your line quality and distance from the exchange.
