You maybe aware that the USB2.0 header with the Red background is a 3Xcharging ON/OFF port, so if you connect the front case USB to that you will have charging even when the PC is powered down.

I wasn't aware of that but if the 4 usb ports and charging port all run off of the same header I'd expect it's already connected as I can charge when off through the standard usb ports. Will take a look later today. Thanks very much

Ok it was already connected to the red header so I plugged in the sata connector (as I don't have a spare) and plugged in a device when pc was off. Nothing. I read that sometimes the pc needs to be in when the device to be charged is first connected so I started up, plugged in (charging began) then shutdown and charging stopped... The sata power is not on a line of its own from the mobo as you suggested as I have too many hdd's that need power but would that make it not work when turned off?
