bittorrent software - how do i get around blocking?

It might make a difference, you will just have to try it. If you go to,

Options -> Preferences -> BitTorrent -> Protocol Encryption -> Enabled (And tick the Allow Incoming Legacy Connections)

Bitcomet supports encryption. I'm not sure if that works though. I've heard vpn does though, maybe you could try setting up a vpn connection to a remote server that downloads for you?

i have no idea... i use "uTorrent". Would happily change the ap if it would make a difference though.
Options >> Preferences >> BitTorrent >> Protocol Encryption >> Set to Enabled

This will encrypt your traffic and your ISP won't block it unless they employ fancy packet sniffing.

EDIT: Beaten like the redheaded stepchild I am. :p

some guy was trying to tell me tiscali where a good ISP a few days ago (network forums), I'm sure he worked for them but then he'd know exactly how bad they where!
I still remeber being on "Tiscali 24/7" dial up and them kicking me off because I was using it too much!!!

I don't know the names of any, but I'm pretty sure you can get applications that disguse the packets in some way, this allows you to use BitTorrent, etc. and also, for people who have to suffer speeds limited to 20kbps, or lower, it will allow the speed to increase.

I know someone who used on of these applications, if I speak to him soon, I will ask him about it; he saw a dramatic increase in speed from lower than 20kbps to around 200kbps.

thanks a lot for the suggestions. i can't test them now since it's after 11pm, but i'll give them a shot tomorrow when the restrictions kick in again at 6pm.

By the way, where did you find out about the restrictions?

I want to see if my ISP is doing similarly.

Thanks.

i found out when i got a letter through the door saying i was being classified as a heavy user. they just said i was being put on 'low priority' at peak times. and since then i've noticed i cant use bittorrent or IRC between 6pm and 11pm. :/

dont do this. Encryption or not it will still count as used bandwidth, use too much during peak hours and they will very quickly stick you onto the badboy pipe and you really dont want that.

That is pretty unfair. I would ask for some form of drop in my bill if I were you. :p

It annoys me that the people who actually use the internet, and are interested in technology, etc. are the ones who get targeted and have to suffer slow speeds, or no access to some services during peak times, when you have hundreds of average children wasting loads of bandwidth on "MSN", and/or "MySpace", when all they say is: "I'm cool", "Wow, I'm random", "Ha Ha"; where is the intelect in that; I would rather be on OCUK, or other forums than having meaningless conversations, or wasting bandwidth listening to songs on MySpace. :p

because heavy downloaders lose them money hand over fist, bandwidth is pretty expensive.

Yeah, I suppose it is logical. It just makes me angry, because I am limited often, and also my ISP provides what I consider to be a sub-standard service sometimes. A lot of the time it is fine, but sometimes 2 days in a week I cannot access the internet (everything at my end is fine, it must be the ISP). I admit that these "no internet" days happen not too frequently, but they annoy me as I feel the need to keep up-to-date on lots of websites, one day out of it means another hour or two checking websites that I am out of sync with.

I suppose when people are downloading the upgrade for their Linux distribution on BitTorrent it will cost the ISP a lot of money, whereas MSN Messenger uses plaint text (am I right?) which wouldn't be massively bandwidth consuming.

If you're using uTorrent you can schedule your downloads so they only run offpeak and so don't count towards your monthly allowance (thats what I do, although it may depend on your ISP's fair usage policy)

i'm gutted that IRC is blocked though... I only use it for chat, so minimal bandwidth. :(
