Bizarre 8800GTS Underclock Experiments

I too underclock my 8800GTS for windows use to save on power consumption. I don't have a meter for comparison, i'd like to get one though.

I run it at 275core/650shader/400mem for windows use and have noticed no problems doing windows things like browsing net/watching movies...etc

In fact I'd try running it even lower but the rivatuner sliders only go down so far...

a gts has a lot of low down torque, even at low clocks it can pull well, something like a 2900 does a vtec style and needs high clocks........ which in turn still get nowhere :)

I'll do a 3dmark06 run sometime to see what I get :p I would like to know how much power I am saving as well somehow.

I think mav is trying to break records for the amount of threads he can slate
a hd2900xt in. Must be about there now.

have to admit though, its quite interesting that the 8800 users are trying to underclock because they got too much performance?, and the 2900 users need to overclock due to not enough performance?

either way this thread is gonna spark something big, i can feel it. :)

:p I just see no reason to be running a high OC when I'm doing windows tasks.

I'm piecing together a water setup so I can vmod the g80 though for when I want even more performance. Would like to hit 12.5k+ with my current processor clock.

its odd, why did nvidia not use seperate 2d/3d profiles with the 8 series? they could easily have lowered the power requirements at idle if they did so.?

I have no idea...the power system seems all whack because according to some vmodding threads I've read the VGPU is 1.26 idle and 1.21 under load.

Vdroop on a GPU!?

what? surly thats the other way around? it shoudl go to 1.26 when under load and 1.21 when idle?

u sure u not got it mixed up.? got a multi meter at hand?

I have a multimeter waiting for me in the post...no idea when it's coming because of the royal mail strike.

I'm getting this info from countless threads I've seen...just google 8800GTS vmod

Everyone seems baffled by it.

Its nothing to do with performance mav. He uses this on his desktop not for
playing games.

Bit weird buying an 8800 for desktop, obviously he plays games if he hasan 8800.

And mav, doubt he's underclocking it coz he's got too much performance, you can never have enoough performance these days ;)

Yeah I certainly don't downclock it for gaming! Like I said, I'm looking to roast the thing up with some vmods.

A few little comments like that, make a cup of tea and watch the ATI users go nuts!!. Mav, you are one funny guy :D.
