Bizarre i7 temps

Hi,

Im getting 52oC idle and anything up 85oC on load, sometimes 90oC on my i7 920. Asus Gene II motherboard fyi.

This is using a mini scythe ninja and im absolutely confused as to what is causing this as ive installed countless cpu coolers with Artic Silver 5 so it isnt how the cooler is mounted.

Three different temp resources are also telling me these temps too :(

Other temps are fine.....this is also with the mobo outside the case.

the heatsink itself feels luke warm, certainly not the type of heat off it you would expect from temps records this high.

house is also of average temp if that is of any importance.

furthermore, just put my finger on the base of cooler, its warm but if it was the temps these sensors are saying my fingers would be burnt.

i had my processor getting up to like 95! i called overclockers as it was one of their systems and the guy said the intel i7 does run really hot. he said that the specification from intel was that the i7 could run at 100 degrees for 10 years before breaking.... sounded a bit strange to me BUT i trust overclockers and the guy assured me that it was fine and if it did break (which it wouldn't) they would replace it. so i guess its fine.

they start to throttle at 100c.....

i wouldnt be happy with over 70

well real temp has just said two of my cores have gone into LOG status after hitting 100oC.

im at a complete loss.

Reseat the cooler time?

I was told this mini scythe coolers are meant to be very good.

The i7 does throw out a hell of a lot of heat. Is this at stock settings or overclocked?

I agree that the heatsink base feeling cool suggests bad contact between heatsink and processor. Can you try it with the stock cooler to rule out the processor? It's also a good idea try it out of the case, as m-atx case + small heatsink traditionally leads to high temperatues for the obvious reasons.

There are reports of "leaky" processors which draw significantly more current than normal so you may have one of these. If it runs so hot that it's unstable using the stock cooler you have a brilliant reason to rma it.

its one of the D0 chips bought this week from OCUK.

i have just removed the heatsink, cleared the as5 off it and re applied a much more smaller layer to just the centre.

currently just re-testing now....computer been on for 10mins and CPU is currently sitting at 43oC with the nb at 53oC.

its out of the case also so the ambient temps shouldnt be an issue.

naaa, idle temps are around 46oC however i just ran Vantage and two of the cpu hit 100oC and go into LOG. dont notice any performance differences though.

the heat sink is definately on properly this time as its far more toasty than it was previously.

how do i find out if i have a dodgy cpu? is this leak problem enough to send it back?

May just be the coolers base that is uneven so it isn't making a proper contact.

Or it could very well me a high leakage chip like Jon already mentioned, I ended up with one of these a while back, thankfully the etailer accepted the fact that something wasn't quite right and they replaced it.

The only way I found out that it was the chip was after testing it thoroughly with a bunch of different coolers.

2 x TRUE's, Zalman 9700NT and the stock cooler, at stock frequency the chip idled at 51c, and under load it would shoot up to the low 80's which is not acceptable imo.

Do you have any other heatsinks you can test it with?

stock hsf gets 82oC tops during gaming and prime 95

its performing better than the ninja

idles at 41oC in the operating system and bios.
i think i might stick with the stock hsf.....shudders.

reckon i should get another case fan to blow over the cpu area directly?

its going into a lian li sff unit.

If the stock fan is beating the ninja it strongly suggests a faulty ninja. I'll have to go and look at the design of the one you're using.

Is this the V350 cube?

edit: heatsink looks like it would be fine even running passively. Recommend rma of heatsink.

Basically OCUK has asked me to dissemble the machine completely again but apply AS5 along with the stock cooler and see how that gets on.

Temps have been much better but they are still high. Im concerned ill get nothing but crashes when i come to play games for any extended period of time.

If that doesnt work then im to RMA both the mobo and the cpu.

What makes you think the motherboard is faulty? High cpu temperatures are pretty much restricted to case / cpu cooler / airflow issues.

Dissassembling the entire machine is a daft idea from OcUK. All you want to do is run the motherboard out of the case for a while, there's nothing to be achieved by taking out the psu/optical/hard drives/anything else.

I'm in the same boat but my chip is over clocked (ocuk system) .
My idle temps are around 52c and upto 75c during gaming. Tried several reseats, as5, mx3 and prolima tech paste and cant get the idle temps down.
Using prime system will hit 90c but is stable.

as stated earlier, it has never been in the case, so airflow is immediately ruled out. The cpu cooler/s have been reseated on at least 3 occassions too.

Ryo, dont prime95 then ;) those temps are perfectly acceptable considering the overclock........mine however.......is completely at stock.

im beginning to think its a sensor issue, as the cpu itself if perfectly easy to pick even 10 mins after it has apparently been at 100oC, it doesnt feel very warm at all, which makes me think the sensor is lying.

What case and what fans RYO? In your example I think it's either an airflow problem or setting excessively high voltages in the bios (your 3.6ghz should be around stock voltages, possibly slightly undervolted).

^Ah, my bad. I thought it started off testing in the case and was then removed. Well, feel free to unplug the various things and plug them back in if you like, but it won't make a damned bit of difference to cpu temperatures. What fan have you put on the ninja? Not that I think this is why it's running hot, but seems about the only question left to ask. It's doing worse than the intel stock cooler when it should be far better, therefore it's faulty.
