Bizarre i7 temps

its the stock fan that comes with the scythe.

the problem isnt necessarilly the scythe, its that the cpu still runs very hot using the stock cooler. Even using the stock cooler its running hotter than it should be doing.

I'm not so sure. I ran ibt on the stock cooler and stopped when it neared 70 (a few minutes in) because I was unwilling to put the processor through high temperatures to sate my curiousy about how crap the stock fan is. 64 load is within reason based on this experience.

apache pushing through heatsink, fans intaking at the front? Best guess on stated information is that the big fan at the top is robbing the apache of airflow, and temperatures will improve if you turn said fan off. Other option is, if there's two fans on the front, that you can defintiely improve matters by putting a piece of non-flammable material between graphics card and cpu, so that the card is fed by a 120mm intake fan and the cpu heatsink gets the other one (or two). The 4870x2 will run hot so suck in a lot of air, which again is air which never reaches your cpu heatsink.

Voltage - Is there any way you could try a different heat sink .
:D Ill try to avoid prime

Mine is the same, idles about 50-60 though and goes up to about 90 at load.

Im using an antec 1200 and the huge noctua cooler. I have tried a few times to reseat the heatsink and reapplied the paste but no go.

It is overclocked to 3.2 but still runs warm stock.

good to know im not the only one.

OCUK completely denied there was a temp problems on certain chips (they would).

Im actually starting to seriously point fingers at my motherboard.

i would definately ring them then too....especially as its a pre built system of theres.

These recent reports may indicate they have a dodge batch of chips.

My chip ran hotter than yours does when using the intel stock cooler. It's solid as a rock at 4ghz and pretty close to stable at 4.4. I'm yet to see anything in this thread which would allow you to conclude that OcUK currently has a bad batch, and still don't follow why you're blaming your motherboard of all things.

Still, if you'd like to give gigabyte a try I'm happy to swap a UD5 for your Gene.

^ Agreed.

It's not going to have anything to do with the motherboard mate, it's either the chip or the heatsink, I personally think it's the latter, as your temps with the stock cooler seem about right to me.

If I were you I'd buy myself another heatsink, one that's tried and tested like a TRUE, or Megahalems.

cpu went to 94oC on the stock cooler tonight running vantage benchmarks......the cooler is DEFINATELY installed correctly.....i have been building systems for over a decade.

That's good news, after a fashion. Run ibt and rma it when it turns off.

You previously reported 64 degrees load for it though, so theres something strange going on here. Either way, scythe performing worse than stock means you've got a knackered one.

it was doing 64oC this morning, tried it again tonight and it was like this.

think im going to get the corsair water cooler for it after the rma.
